eNewsletter – spring term

It has been wonderful to see so many OEs over the past term, both back at school and further afield. Earlier in the year we enjoyed a superb Exonian Lecture from Alex Leger (1958-1966) as well as a rousing Choral Society performance in Exeter Cathedral, with a number of OEs singing alongside staff, pupils and parents. More recently, a significant number of OEs came together in the House of Commons for our London dinner. Alumni generously gave their time and expertise to pupils at two significant careers events this term – the Lower Sixth Futures Conference and our Engineering Panel (more on both below). Our Development Board, who provide strategic advice on philanthropy at the school, had a productive meeting this month. The school remains very grateful to all those who, often quietly and loyally, support the school and future Exonians with gifts to our bursary fund.

You will find details of upcoming OE events in this eNewsletter. I hope we will see many of you there, and please do get in touch with my colleague Claire Priday, our events officer, if you have any questions – clp@exeterschool.org.uk.

The school is as busy as ever, with numerous sports fixtures – read about one particularly successful netball achievement below – concerts, art exhibitions, drama performances and as well as other events including (but not limited to!) library sleepovers, World Book Day celebrations, and Founders’ Day. I hope you enjoy Acting Head Graham Bone’s reflections on all the wonderful opportunities that Exeter School offers to pupils today, having recently spent a Saturday interviewing our prefect candidates, I can certainly attest to the fact that pupils are very much making the most of what Exeter School has to provide.

I hope this better weather continues into the Easter holidays and wish you a relaxing and enjoyable break if you’re able to take some time off. A number of you will receive a call as part of our telephone campaign – I know the callers are already looking forward to talking to you.

End of term reflections

At the end of the spring term, Acting Head Graham Bone shares his reflections on Exeter School and what it means to be an Exonian.

Changing futures

“I joined Exeter School Sixth Form in 2021 from a state school, thanks to the bursary programme. The opportunities available were incredible – becoming a senior prefect, running the History Society, and joining MedSoc.”

During his time at Exeter School, Adam developed a passion for quizzing, even setting up a University Challenge club. This interest continued beyond school and ultimately led to him competing on the show while at university. With the support and guidance he received at school, Adam went on to study medicine at the University of Manchester, an achievement he is immensely proud of.

“I am also the first in my family to attend university and my mum, who is a cleaner at my primary school, loves to brag to my former teachers about how far I’ve come. It makes me very proud to say that I went to Exeter School.”

Stories like this inspire our commitment to growing the Bursary Fund, but we need your support to make it happen. To learn how you can help provide a young person with access to an exceptional education, please do get in touch with Alice Holohan – asah@exeterschool.org.uk.

Futures Conference

The Lower Sixth Futures Conference, held on Tuesday 3 March 2026, was a fantastic opportunity for pupils to hear from a range of Exeter School alumni who returned to share their experiences and career journeys. We were delighted to welcome back former pupils including Patricia Emery (1987-1989), James Gibbs (1989-1991), Jonathan Githens-Mazer (1989-1990), current parent Christopher Green, Isaac Hopkins (Exeter School’s athletics development coach), David House (1980-1985), Halla Ragi (1997-1999), current parent Jane Trollope, Russ Wakeham (1990-2001) and Stephen Wickers (1984-1988).

Their careers span an impressive range of fields, from publishing and media to aviation and entrepreneurship, giving pupils a broad and inspiring insight into the many paths available after school. We are extremely grateful to all of our alumni for giving their time so generously and for sharing their knowledge and experiences.

Senior School netball champions

It was a memorable day for Exeter School’s U16 netball squad, who were crowned Sisters n Sport National Bowl champions at Finals Day, held at Loughborough University. The team delivered a string of impressive performances across the day, demonstrating resilience, unity and calmness under pressure. Their semi-final clash with Manchester High School for Girls proved to be a nail-biter, with Exeter edging a thrilling contest 24–23 to secure their place in the final. Facing Surbiton High School in the final, the squad rose to the challenge with confidence and control. A dominant display saw them claim a 25–19 victory, sealing the National Bowl title in style.

Engineering panel

We were delighted to welcome a group of alumni back for a recent engineering panel event. Our speakers, all working in engineering, included Tim Durrant (1968-1975), Paul Harrison (1968-1975), Gareth Croft (1987-1994), Ryan Salt (1997-2002), Charlie Martin (1999-2004), Brittany Harris (1999-2010), Kristina Pill (2001-2008), Patrick Mabin (2006-2013), Marcus May (2007-2012) and Aimée Dearness (2017-2024).

Some speakers arrived early for a tour of the school with a pupil interested in studying engineering, before each giving a short talk about their career journey. The event concluded with a networking session, where pupils were able to speak directly with the panel members, ask questions and gain further advice.

A big thank you to all our speakers for giving their time and supporting the next generation of engineers.

London dinner at the House of Commons

Our OE Dinner took place on Saturday 7 March in the stunning Members’ and Strangers’ Dining Rooms at the House of Commons, hosted by Acting Head, Graham Bone. An impressive 170 OEs joined us (plus partners) from across the UK – one even flew in all the way from the Czech Republic, a truly remarkable effort!

The evening was made even more special by the presence of teachers John Davidson (staff, 1976-2018), (Mike Wilcock (staff, 1986-2020), Sue Cloke (staff, 1987-2011), and Giles Trelawny (staff, 1993-2024), who joined in the celebrations. Guests enjoyed a sumptuous three-course dinner, followed by lively networking and plenty of opportunities to reconnect and reminisce.

An Austrian adventure

During February half term, 38 pupils and staff enjoyed an unforgettable ski trip to Austria. After a long but lively journey, pupils spent five fantastic days skiing in Lungau and Obertauern, making excellent progress and experiencing everything from fresh powder to a perfect bluebird day. Evenings were filled with fun après-ski activities, including a pub quiz, bowling, swimming and a trip to the Lucky Flitzer rollercoaster. Throughout the week, pupils showed great determination, resilience and enthusiasm – Mike Glanville (Assistant Head, middle school).

We are sure many alumni have fond memories of similar adventures abroad. If you have a story to share from a school trip, we would love to hear from you – please email alumni@exeterschool.org.uk.

Enterprising juniors

After months of creativity and teamwork, junior school pupils recently completed the Virgin Money: Make £5 Grow challenge. Having sold their products during break time, pupils then took part in a Dragons’ Den-style final, where they confidently presented their ideas and answered questions from the panel. It was fantastic to see the confidence and communication skills on display. Congratulations to Nature.com, who were named overall winners, and Lucky Charms, who raised an impressive £168.68 to win the highest profit award.

Sharing your stories and tracking down alumni

In the past, the Old Exonian magazine featured short updates from alumni about where life had taken them since their school days. We would love to continue this format in The 1633, but we need your help! So whether it’s a big achievement or a small milestone, please share your news with us. Send your updates to communications and alumni officer, Ali McGeown.

The Alumni and Development office helps OEs stay connected, and we’re often happy to assist in tracking down members of our alumni community. If there’s a former classmate or teacher you’d like to contact, please use the button below.

We were touched to learn that alumna Ellie Dawson (2005-2013) will be running the London Marathon in memory of her dad, Richard Dawson (staff, 1991-2014).

Many of you may remember Mr Dawson from your time at the school, when he was our Head of Modern Languages, described by his colleagues as “one of the nicest, calmest and wisest men you could possibly meet”.

Ellie will be raising money for Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice, who looked after him in his final weeks. You can find out more about Ellie’s fundraising efforts via the link in our bio.

We wish Ellie the best of luck and would love to hear from other alumni who are taking part in this year’s London Marathon. Please do comment or send us a message so that we can celebrate your journey.

A huge congratulations to alumnus Ian Williams (1990-1995), who recently won his ninth world title at the Match Racing World Championship in Shenzhen, China.

The @worldmatchracingtour is one of sailing’s most prestigious series, bringing together the world’s leading sailors to compete head-to-head in identical boats.

Following the historic victory, Ian heaped praise on his incredible team of Gerard Mitchell, Richard Sydenham and Jon Gundersen, saying “I love sailing with these guys, and of course it’s that much sweeter when we get to hoist the trophy. It’s an incredible feeling to win again”

You can read more about Ian and his team’s remarkable achievement through the article (link in bio) on the @worldsailingofficial website.

Thank you to former physics teacher and Head of CCF Rex Frost (staff, 1979-2007) for sharing this fantastic news.
