Congratulations to Nathaniel in Third Form, who has just returned from his very first National Children’s Orchestra weekend in Birmingham! It was a brilliant few days, and we couldn’t be prouder of him.
A Weekend to Remember
Nathaniel travelled to Birmingham to join young musicians from across the country for an intensive orchestral weekend. Playing the French horn alongside some of the UK’s most talented young performers, he gained invaluable experience rehearsing and performing at a national level.
The programme gave Nathaniel the chance to stretch himself musically, sharpen his technique, and learn what it takes to work as part of a large ensemble under professional direction. It’s exactly this kind of challenge that helps young musicians grow in both skill and confidence.
Masquerade and New Music on the Programme
The orchestra’s repertoire was every bit as exciting as the occasion itself. Musicians performed Khachaturian’s Masquerade, a dazzling and dramatic suite full of colour and character, alongside several brand-new pieces commissioned specially for the National Children’s Orchestra weekends. Performing newly commissioned works is a rare opportunity, giving young players a genuine hand in bringing fresh music to life.
Music at Exeter School
Achievements like Nathaniel’s reflect the strength of music-making at Exeter School, where pupils are encouraged to pursue their instruments well beyond the classroom. Whether in ensembles, ABRSM exams, or national opportunities like this one, our pupils are supported every step of the way by dedicated staff who love to see musical talent flourish.
