We are delighted to share the news that Ruffles, the much-loved school dog belonging to Mr Ayling from Exeter School’s Pre-Prep, has been Highly Commended in the UK School Dog of the Year Awards 2026.
This national recognition celebrates the wonderful contribution Ruffles makes to the Exeter School community and acknowledges the care, commitment and affection shown by pupils and staff towards their four-legged friend.
The UK School Dog of the Year Awards recognise schools that create nurturing and supportive environments through the positive presence of dogs in education.
The awards team was impressed by the inspiring work taking place at Exeter School and by the clear bond between Ruffles, pupils and staff. The entry highlighted the thoughtful way in which Ruffles is welcomed into school life and the positive experiences he helps to create for those around him.
As Daniel’s dog from Pre-Prep, Ruffles has become a familiar and much-loved presence within the Exeter School community. His gentle nature and friendly personality help bring moments of happiness, calm and connection to pupils and staff throughout the school day.

Ruffles is a wonderful example of how the wider school community works together to support children’s wellbeing. Whether welcoming pupils, providing companionship or simply offering a friendly face, he helps make everyday moments at school even more special.
