Upper One Explore Nature Through Science and Poetry
Upper One pupils enjoyed a much-anticipated field trip to Stover Country Park on Wednesday 3 June, spending a day immersed in nature while combining scientific discovery with creative writing.
The visit provided an exciting opportunity for pupils to explore the natural world first-hand, bringing together learning from both Science and English in a memorable outdoor setting.
Discovering Wildlife at Stover Country Park
The morning began with a pond-dipping session, where pupils carefully observed and identified a variety of fascinating pond creatures. Equipped with nets and trays, they explored the rich biodiversity of the park’s freshwater habitats and learned more about the species that call Stover home.
Pupils then visited a range of different habitats around the park, guided by one of Stover Country Park’s experienced rangers. As they explored woodlands, wetlands and open spaces, they gained a deeper understanding of local ecosystems and the importance of protecting the natural environment.
Finding Inspiration in Nature
In the afternoon, attention turned from scientific observation to creative expression. Inspired by the plants and animals they had encountered throughout the day, pupils explored the work of renowned poet Ted Hughes.
Together, they listened to and discussed two of his nature-themed poems, focusing on literary techniques such as metaphors, similes and personification. The session encouraged pupils to think carefully about how writers use language to bring the natural world to life.
Outdoor Poetry and Teamwork
The creative challenge continued with a carved creature treasure hunt. Working in six groups, pupils searched the woodland for a collection of carved animals hidden among the trees.
Using their discoveries as inspiration, each group collaborated to write an original poem. The day concluded in the park’s impressive outdoor classroom, where pupils confidently shared their work with the rest of the year group.
A Day to Remember
The trip was a wonderful example of integrated learning, combining scientific enquiry, outdoor education and creative writing. Pupils returned to school tired but inspired after a day filled with exploration, discovery and imagination.
It was a fantastic opportunity for Upper One to develop their curiosity, creativity and appreciation of the natural world while enjoying all that Stover Country Park has to offer.
