Schools Challenge Quiz

Posted: 4th April 2025

On Thursday 27 March, two teams took part in the National Schools Challenge Quiz Competition. The teams were well led by Toby P and Henry B from the sixth form.

Toby writes:

On Thursday 27 March, the school’s quiz team competed against Islington Collegiate Sixth Form for a place in the national finals of the Schools Challenge Quiz, a University Challenge-style competition. The team, consisting of sixth-formers Toby, the captain, Cadan, Caspar, and Matthew, engaged in a hard-fought battle, with questions on a wide variety of topics ranging from ancient history to Paddington Bear and grunge music. The match ended in a tight victory for the team, thanks to a late surge, by 500-480 points. Well done to both teams for such a competitive game! A massive thanks to Mr Gooddy for his excellent question master skills and for running the weekly quiz club on Friday lunchtimes. The team now progress to the national finals, the first time the school has ever reached this stage in the competition, to be held at Winchester College.”

Henry reflected on his match:

“Last Thursday, our quiz team triumphed over Sheringham Sixth Form in the Schools Challenge Quiz Competition semi-finals with a strong score of 220-90. The match was intensely competitive, but our well-prepared team answered questions well. My scientific expertise proved invaluable throughout the tournament, while Lucas delivered consistently on sporting questions. Tyler’s historical knowledge has contributed significantly to our winning streak, and Todd’s quick mathematical calculations earned us crucial points in tight situations. Todd and Andrew served as brilliant all rounder and maths machines!”

Both teams are through to national finals which will take place at the end of April. Best of luck to them both!
