Poetry by Heart competition

Posted: 10th February 2025

Last Friday, 58 pupils from the junior school took part in the Poetry by Heart competition in the school chapel, performing their chosen poems. The poems spanned the ages, ranging from Classical and Victorian, to modern but all of the pupils took the audience on a journey with their interpretations of a vast range of works.

Some of the pupils performed alone, whilst others took to the stage in groups and each of the supported one another during their performances, helping others overcome their nerves. Whilst the judges came to their decisions, audience were also treated to a musical interlude, with performances from Vally, Isabelle and Ralph.

It was a tough decision for the judges (Mrs Van, Mr Ayling, Miss Rose, Mrs Handley, Mrs Russell and Mr Pidwell) to choose just four performances to advance to the next round, but they finally narrowed it down to the following pupils:

  • Rafe (F1C) who performed Jabberwocky by Lewis Carroll.
  • Toby H (L2M) who performed Toilet Seat by Harry Baker.
  • Lizzie and Mabel (U2C) who performed Sky In The Pie by Roger McGough.
  • Connor (U2C) who performed The Story of Little Suck-a-Thumb by Heinrich Hoffmann.

Also going through in the Classic category are Jennifer (U1W), Krithik (U2T), and Cressida (U2E).

Well done to all the pupils who took part in the competition and for performing their poems so beautifully.
