Thanks to Sixth Formers leading Royal Institution Physics Masterclasses

Posted: 6th September 2024

What are The Royal Institution Masterclasses?

The Royal Institution Masterclasses are extra curricular workshops in mathematics or computer science. They are organised in schools and universities across the UK, as well as in other STEM – related organisations. They are a way for organisations to provide meaningful STEM enrichment, with a focus on Mathematics and Computer Science, for students in their local community.

A wide range of contributors support the programme including school teachers, university staff and other outreach specialists: organising Masterclasses or undertaking roles of supervisor, helper or speaker (workshop leader). Masterclass groups often connect with local STEM industry companies and heritage organisations who like to get involved with Masterclasses, contributing support or volunteers to better provide an enriching experience.

Workshops led by pupils at Exeter School

Sixth Form pupils held classes on various subject with pupils visiting Alison Eves, Masterclass Coordinator, based in London passed on her personal thanks to our school and staff for their efforts put into workshops hosted at Exeter School in February. She said:

“We want to express our gratitude to you and your colleagues at Exeter School for once again hosting Royal Institution Primary Maths for Physics Masterclasses. With your support another generation of Year 5 mathematicians and scientists from local primaries have been inspired and excited by some beautiful extra curricular STEM workshops – thank you!

In particular I’d like to once again thank Dominic Tuohey, who worked really hard, and effectively, to build on foundations laid down by the first Masterclass series in the previous year. I particularly value his enthusiasm and efficiency. Your sixth formers were also a delight to work with, showing lots of initiative, and full of good ideas. I hope that the Year 12 Masterclass student leaders, as well as the visiting primary school aged pupils, all enjoyed the experience and are inspired to do even more mathematics and physics in the future.

We thank you as a school community for supporting The Royal Institution Masterclasses.”

Future masterclasses

We are looking forward to hosting more classes in the 2024-2025 academic year so if you’re interested in finding out more, please head to The Royal Institution website.
