Our Music School has an outstanding reputation and offers specialist classrooms, 18 practice rooms and a concert hall. A rich annual programme of contemporary and classical concerts, at school and throughout the region, enables pupils of all ages to experience the thrill of live performance of both established works and their own compositions. We enjoy regular performances at Exeter Cathedral and a number of local churches.
Each pupil is an individual, and we tailor-make the class teaching, instrumental teaching, ensembles and groups each year, to their interests. Nearly 500 music lessons a week are taken by Junior and Senior School pupils, taught by 27 visiting teachers.
The three academic staff and eight of the instrumental teachers coach and rehearse five orchestras, seven chamber ensembles, eight choirs, two brass ensembles, five jazz bands and a samba drum troupe.
All classes in the Junior School receive two music lessons per week plus hymn practice. There is a wide variety of musical activities available outside the curriculum including Junior Choir, Junior Singers, String Group, Wind & Brass Group and Junior Orchestra. There are strong links with Senior School music with junior classes being taught in the Music School by specialist music staff, teaching from KS2 through to KS5.
There is a full programme of annual musical events including the Carol Service, Spring Concert, Summer Musical Production and a series of informal workshop concerts. Junior School ensembles also combine with Senior School pupils in major school events such as Founders’ Day in Exeter Cathedral, Christmas and Summer Concerts.
