Pre-Prep Reflections

Pre-Prep Reflections Week 5 October 2024

Dear parents,

Grandparents’ afternoon

The children have been hotly anticipating our grandparents’ afternoon all week! Every day I have had children asking me, “When is my grandma/grandad coming?” It is such a special moment for them and always a pleasure to have grandparents in school. This afternoon we welcomed over 100 visitors for classroom tours and afternoon tea in the hall. The children each decorated a cupcake coaster for their visitors to take away as a memento.

Lovely lunches

Each day this week I have been inviting 2-3 children to have lunch with me in the school office. This is something we started last year with Nursery, and this term I am focusing on children in Reception. This is a great opportunity to chat to the children, remind them about good table manners and, of course, give Ruffles a treat! On Tuesday, we enjoyed having Zoe and Ali from the alumni office at Exeter School over for lunch. They sat with Year 1 and Year 2 and were very impressed with the children’s conversation and independence.

Google Classroom (Years 1 and 2 only)

Apologies for the problems we have experienced with Google Classroom. For those that have not managed to login, the passwords have been reset and are working again. The password, email address and class code are the same as the original one that was sent home with the ‘Google Classroom Parent Guide’. Please try to login as soon as possible. If you have any further problems, please let us know.

Next week

We look forward to welcoming two new joiners next week: Charlotte into Year 1 and Tadhg into Nursery. Our Nursery sessions are now full on Thursdays. Please note that Mrs Goodwill will be teaching Year 2 on Monday instead of Ms Richards. All Year 2 children are invited to attend a taster day at Exeter Junior School next Thursday. We have sent home a letter and reply form in the children’s bags today. Please could we have this back on Monday.

I will no doubt see some of you at Exeter School tomorrow for their open event. Please do come and say hello if you are coming along.

Mr Daniel Ayling

Spotlight on Nursery

The Nursery children have had a very busy week learning about all things autumn! In mathematics, we have been learning about 2D shapes, playing ‘guess the shape’ using descriptive language to identify the shape hidden in the bag. We have also been practising our scissor cutting skills while creating an autumn shape picture. In literacy, our book of the week has been The Colour Monster; through this we have been able to explore with colour and talk about expressing our feelings. The children enjoyed colour mixing and creating their own class monster. We have also been on an autumn hunt around the school grounds, using our senses, collecting different sized leaves and making leaf hedgehogs. We will be using some of the leaves to create headbands for the harvest assembly. The children are settling into Nursery beautifully and we are so proud of them all!

Harvest Assembly

Parents are warmly invited to attend our harvest assembly on Friday 18 October from 3pm in the school hall. You do not need to reserve tickets. Nursery children who do not attend on Fridays are welcome to join parents in the audience.

We will once again be supporting our local food bank, the Westbank community larder, and would welcome non-perishable donations to be brought into school by the children from Monday next week. All donations are welcome but priority items listed by the charity are:

  • Fruit squash and fruit juice (long life)
  • Tinned meat, fish, vegetables, potatoes
  • Tinned soup, tinned pies
  • Biscuits
  • Dry noodle snacks
  • Pasta sauces
  • Jams and spreads
  • Custard
  • Sponge pudding
  • Coffee
  • Household items (washing up liquid, laundry capsules, etc.)

We would appreciate it if items could be sent in carrier bags or small boxes to aid transportation. Every item will be used to help a local person or family in need. Thank you in advance for your support.

House point totals

The children have continued to do well in demonstrating our school character virtues of kindness, helpfulness, curiosity and teamwork. The tokens have been counted and here are the totals for the last two weeks:

Devonport (Red): 136

Brixham (Yellow): 132

Bridgwater (Green): 131

Bideford (Blue): 123

Congratulations to Devonport! We now have our smart new house shields on display in the hall. Every fortnight, these are hung in rank order in our celebration assembly. Thanks to the operations team for making these for us.
