We are looking to appoint a Head of Rugby & Teacher of physical education and games to join our school, a school of great character, from September 2026.
We are seeking a forward-looking and inspirational Head of Rugby & Teacher of physical education and games to work in this thriving and successful team and lead an established rugby programme throughout the junior and senior school (Years 3-13). This role would suit someone with teaching experience and preferably someone who has previous experience as head of rugby in a school.
Applicants should hold Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and be confident teaching physical education and games across the full age range (Years 3–13). Experience in delivering a broad range of curriculum sports to a high standard is essential. Candidates must have significant experience coaching and teaching rugby up to 1st XV (U18) level, alongside the ability to lead teams in the school’s other core sports of hockey, cricket, and netball. Beyond curriculum teaching, the successful applicant will play a key role in the wider co-curricular sports programme, contributing to lunchtime, afterschool and weekend commitments.
The Head of Rugby will have overarching responsibility for the design, development and delivery of the rugby programme at Exeter School ensuring that our pupil athletes achieve their maximum potential. This includes shaping player pathways, supporting and developing staff, and ensuring the smooth administration of the sport. Excellent organisational and interpersonal skills are essential, including the capacity to manage the fixture list, coordinate coaching teams, and maintain strong relationships across the school community. Alongside this, they will play a fundamental role in promoting a culture of inclusivity and belonging within sport and rugby for all pupils and staff, ensuring that whole school aims and virtues feed into all aspects of the rugby programme.
The PE department is made up of nine full-time and two part time physical education teachers who are supported by members of academic staff in coaching games and a number of external coaches. All members of the department are expected to teach across the junior (Years 3-6) and senior school (Years 7-13).
Pupils at Exeter school have timetabled PE and Games lessons from Years 3 – 9 and pupils in Years 10 – 13 continue their curriculum Games lessons throughout their time in school. Extra-curricular activities are extensive with clubs and specialist sessions at lunchtime and clubs, activities and practices after school. Exeter School field teams in the core sports of hockey, netball and cricket for girls and rugby, hockey and cricket for boys as well as competitive squads in sports including athletics, cross country, football, swimming, squash. Fixtures take place at weekends and during the week with teams competing against some of the best schools in the south-west as well as regional and national competitions. We also aim to provide competitive opportunities for all our pupils through bock fixtures and internal house competitions. Exeter School has excellent facilities which include 25 acres of playing fields, a floodlight astro development, swimming pool, sports hall, newly refurbished gym, studio and aerobic room.
Rugby is the core boys’ sport in the autumn term, and Exeter School is proud of its strong rugby heritage. We field teams from U8 to U18, with A, B and occasional C teams ensuring participation and progression for players of all abilities. Each year group benefits from the guidance of experienced staff, many with high-level playing and coaching backgrounds, and the programme is led by the Head of rugby. Rugby is central to the Games curriculum: all pupils from U8–U11 and U12–U13 take part in age appropriate rugby, ranging from contact to adapted and non-contact formats. From U14 upwards, pupils make an informed choice of sport, and rugby continues to attract excellent numbers.
Our fixture list is extensive and competitive, with regular block fixtures against leading schools across the Southwest, including Blundell’s, King’s College Taunton, Bryanston, Bristol GS, West Buckland, Plymouth College and QEH Bristol. The school also competes in the county and national cups at U14, U15 and U18, and enters major 7s tournaments each spring, including county, West of England and the Rosslyn Park National 7s. Exeter School has a proud record of player development. Pupils frequently gain county, regional, academy and Lambs national representation, and many progress into BUCS Super Rugby programmes. Several former pupils have moved into the professional game, including the 2024-25 1st XV captain who signed with Exeter Chiefs, and alumnus Matt Hopper, who went on to play for Harlequins and represent the England Saxons.

We are seeking a reliable Minibus Driver to safely transport pupils to and from school, ensuring they arrive on time each morning and are collected promptly after the school day. This role is part of our Operations and Professional Services team and is based on-site, working Monday to Friday for 37.5 hours per week during term time only. The core Minibus Driver position is part-time, working Monday to Friday from 6:30am–8:30am and 5:00pm–7:00pm.
There is also the option to make this role full-time by taking on additional Facilities Assistant duties, which include supporting the smooth running of the school through minor maintenance, general housekeeping, porterage, and site security.
