National cup week – competing with character

Posted: 10th October 2025

Our senior teams have had a busy week of national cup sport with the 1st XV rugby competing against Sherborne in the second round of the schools cup, the 1st XI girls’ hockey team against Blundell’s in their equivalent competition and the U15 rugby team against Ivybridge. Unfortunately it was a tough week of results with all three teams losing narrowly against strong opposition, however, anyone who watched the matches will have been impressed with the character of all three squads, typified by their determination and teamwork.

The comebacks from both of the rugby sides was impressive. The 1st XV, who were trailing 3-18 at one stage, rallied to fightback to 22-24 but were unbale to find the decisive score. Similarly, the U15s were losing by 10 points before closing the gap to a single score with five minutes remaining. A late Ivybridge try meant a 21-31 defeat and heartbreak for the second day running. The girls’ 1st XI hockey were equally impressive in a match which saw them defend for most of the 60 minutes. A final scoreline of 0-2 against a strong Blundell’s team didn’t tell the full story and the girls’ need congratulating for their defensive effort.

We hope that all three performances will be a great foundation on which to build heading into the next half term and, for the hockey squad, an exciting tour of Holland starting next Friday.
