Bumper week of rugby and hockey

Posted: 11th October 2024

The past week has seen a huge number of sports fixtures take place in what has been another incredibly busy sporting schedule. Following a successful open day block against Mount Kelly last Saturday, teams have played in cup competitions against Redruth School (at the famous Redruth Rugby club) against Colyton Grammar School in the U14 county cup as well as Kingsley School, St Peter’s High School and Torquay Boys’ Grammar School at 2nd XV, U16B and U12 respectively. It has been great to have so many visiting teams and there were some superb contests against each with some noteworthy performances for the U16B (12-12) and U12As (20-5). The U12s, who are in the first half term of senior school rugby, have made really pleasing progress and have shown their potential with two wins in recent weeks. This week’s victory was, in part, thanks to a hat trick from Rory R! The rugby squads get a well-deserved rest this weekend before a busy final week before half term with the Exeter School U15s 10-a-side tournament taking place on Thursday and the senior rugby squads departing on their tour to Portugal early on Friday. We hope they have a wonderful trip.

The school girls’ hockey teams have been equally as busy with the girls continuing with their block fixtures alongside the start of the annual west of England indoor tournaments. Last weekend’s block against King’s, Taunton was a challenging one and all of the year groups were involved in some superb matches. There were noteworthy wins for the U14As, who remain unbeaten this half term, U15B and a narrow defeat, but excellent performance, for the U15A. The U18 girls and U16 boys played in the indoor tournaments this week travelling to Taunton and Wellington respectively and, despite finding the experience and results tough, will benefit from the exposure to an excellent standard of indoor schools’ hockey. There was even time to squeeze in an U12 fixture against The Maynard and 1st XI cup fixture at home to King’s, Bruton. This weekend sees the teams play Wellington School in the final fixture of the half term – we wish them well.
