Amelie’s sailing success

Posted: 7th August 2025

We’re so proud of everything that Amelie, about to move into Upper Fifth (Year 11), gets up to in her sporting field of sailing. But alongside that, she’s become a real ambassador for protecting our waters for future generations. She works alongside the Clean Sailors organisation, a non-profit organisation, and raises awareness on what sailors can do to help.

“As a keen dinghy sailor, there is nothing I like better than getting in my (Rooster) wetsuit and jumping on my boat- it’s the best feeling in the world! However, over the past year, I have started to realise the effects that humans are having on the waters we use and the oceans in general. The statistics around pollution, climate change and habitat destruction are quite shocking, and unfortunately, the evidence of these statistics can be seen rather close to home sometimes- I often see dead wildlife/sea creatures, plastic pollution and sewage where I sail, and it’s not pleasant. As someone who loves using the water, this concerned me, and I wanted to help bring about change. However, I am only a 15-year-old dinghy sailor from Devon, so what can I possibly do to change this global environmental problem? So, to start with, I did my research and created a list of the simple things I could promote at my club (Starcross Yacht Club). Then, earlier this year, I became a Clean Sailors Ambassador and joined a community of international sailors who all want to raise awareness of ocean conservation and sustainable practices in the marine industry. I also joined the US SailGP Climate Action Academy that links students with A-list sustainable experts to learn about global matters. Using social media has been a great platform, and I have organised old sails and wetsuit collections, as well as helping to raise awareness about key issues. Thank you, ITCA Topper community, for your kind sail and wetsuit donations at NS5 Paignton.”

Amelie (M5) is an avid dinghy sailor and last weekend travelled to Rutland to compete in the Eric Twainame (ETs) National Championships; a three day dinghy racing championship run by the RYA. Amelie sailed in her Topper against 82 other RTG selected Topper sailors (the best in each region of Great Britain). Amelie achieved 2nd female and made it onto the podium (18th out of 82). A great achievement in very windy conditions  against squad sailors from as far away is Northern Ireland and Scotland.

Amelie is a sponsored sailor for Goat Marine and Allen Brothers, as well as a team rider for Rooster and Optimum Time. She is also a UK Ambassador for Clean Sailors and a teen columnist for All at Sea National Newspaper.

This season, Amelie, in Middle Fifth, finished as the first female sailor in the Topper Dinghy class in the ITCA South West region. She also recently passed a qualification weekend to be awarded a place on the Royal Yachting Association/ British Youth Sailing Junior Pathway meaning that she will now join a regional training group to gain experience from Olympic level RYA coaches.

Another exciting result of Amelie’s success, means that she has recently been offered the chance to become a team rider for Rooster sailing! After such a successful season, we cant wait to continue to follow Amelie’s progress!
