Successful finish to squash season

South West Squash Team Championships

Exeter School’s top squash players took part in the inaugural South West Squash Team Championships which ran at Exeter Golf and Country Club on 12 May.

The co-educational independent school entered three teams in the event, which involved 24 sides from all over the region, from Wycliffe School and Cheltenham Ladies College in Gloucestershire, to Truro School in Cornwall.

The age range of competitors was from 8 years old in the D grade category, all the way up to 17 years old in the A Grade event. The A Grade was especially strong, with some of the top U17 and U15 players in the country competing for various teams.

The school sides all competed really well (despite losing a few players to the Ten Tors Challenge).

The sides and final finishing positions were as follows:

- A Team (James Horler/Max Cockram/Oliver Gribble) finished third in the A grade event.

- B Team (Charlie Hill/Bobby Heard/Freddie Cockram) finished third in the B grade event.

- C Team (Lauren Brown/Elle Golsworthy/Scott Munroe-Higgs) finished fifth in the C grade event.

Former pupil and squash coach Mike Harris (2000 - 2005) said the attitude and the team ethic of the Exeter players was fantastic.

“All of them were coaching each other through matches and supporting their team mates in the other sides all the way,” he said.

“It was also great to see other Exeter School pupils representing the Exeter Golf and Country Club sides in the C Grade event with Sam Luddington and Jack Church putting in some top effort too.

“It’s been a great year for Exeter School Squash and this was a brilliant finish to the season.”
