Thriving sports teams compete at top level

Over fifty selections at county, regional or national level

Many of Exeter School’s sports teams have a reputation for success. So much so, in fact, that over fifty current boys and girls have also been selected to play at county, South-West or national level.

IMG_2675 best 350The U18 rugby team has had one of the most successful seasons in its history, winning both the Devon seven and fifteen-a-side trophies, whilst the U15 team were county runners-up. In boys’ hockey, the U13, U14, U16 and U18 teams were all county runners-up and the girls also reached the finals at U14, U16 and U18 level.

Although the cricket season is in its early weeks, the U13 team, last year’s county champions, are competing in the South West National Finals, and last year’s national champions, the current U12 team is unbeaten to date.

As well as elite team sports, the school runs internal House competitions in twelve sports and over fifteen sporting clubs and activities. Among these, the school’s shooting team in particular has excelled, winning the Mere Cup, the full-bore regional trophy, for the fourth time running, and the RAF Air Cadet National Assegai Trophy five times in the last seven years.

Andy Mason, Director of Sport, comments on how physical education is an integral feature of the Exeter School experience:
Sport here is for everyone, not just top performers, and, more importantly, it is pupil-led.  If anyone expresses an interest in a particular physical activity, be it table tennis, dance or even ultimate Frisbee, we will do our best to facilitate participation at some level. We try to encourage pupils to show loyalty and commitment beyond personal achievement.
