New Junior Library opens its doors!

World Book Day sees major opening ceremony

IMG_3853.jpgWorld Book Day saw the opening of the brand new Junior Library in the Junior School. Children will now be able to enjoy and borrow books in a colourful, dedicated space in the heart of the school. Over the last few months both staff and pupils have been hard at work planning and building the library, with the aim of making it as user-friendly as possible. The finished product has a great quantity of fiction books to appeal to all ages, abilities and interests, including picture books and annuals, as well as those specifically tailored to meet learning needs. The introduction of a simplified Dewey Classification System means that the non-fiction books are now easily accessible and much more appealing. Indeed, there is even a special ‘Horrible’ section for the ever popular Terry Deary books.  Over four hundred new books have added to current stocks to provide a fantastic boost over both sections.

The library is home to a much-loved mascot, Twiglet the Owl, named by the children through a competition. The little owl gives guiding information all around the library and appears on the shelf labels to help locate the books. The pupils’ ‘Twiglet Circles’ decorate the bright walls, showing him in all sorts of different and imaginative guises, from scuba-diving Twiglet to RAF Twiglet. He even has his own owl book shelf, which houses the much sought after activity and picture books. Twiglet certainly is a very important owl!

IMG_3852.jpgPupils will be able to borrow two books at a time from the library, encouraging them to read both fiction and non-fiction. The Recommendation Book is already filling up with suggestions of books that children have enjoyed, or those they wish to read. It is always exciting bringing new books on to the shelves in response to immediate interest.

A crack team of Junior Librarians are running the library, under the auspices of Miss Bewley. Indeed, becoming a librarian is a rather busy, competitive field. These girls and boys have already put in a huge amount of work into labelling and cataloguing books and have a thorough understanding of the systems in place. They are due many thanks indeed for their dedication and effort. They are timetabled to be on hand at all times to help out, make suggestions and deal with loans.

The Junior Library has provided yet another huge boost to the popularity of reading and books in the school. It will continue to change with the times and be a bright and friendly place to appeal to pupils. It also adds another resource for the school to be enjoyed at breaks, in lessons, for research and for encouragement, not forgetting. Most importantly, of course, it is home to Twiglet the owl, who loves books most of all.
