In the Senior Maths Challenge Michael Dawson was Best in School and winner of a Gold award; there were 9 Silver awards and 33 Bronze.

    PHYSICS OLYMPIAD
Six members of the U6 entered the British Physics Olympiad. The grades possible are Commendation, Bronze II, Bronze I, Silver and Gold. Only the most enter this and the Gold medal goes to the top 5% of those that enter. Our results were: Noah Mosley Bronze II, Lucian Cawthron Bronze II, Olivia Hampsher-Monk Bronze II, Josh Johnson Bronze I, Cameron Clark Bronze I, Andrew Melzer Gold. Andrew has now been invited to take part in Round 3, which is a 3-day training camp near Oxford.

Ben Eccles, Guy Millward, Stuart Hoddinott, Joe Lyons, Will Edwards, Laura Collison and Jocelyn Trayler-Clarke represented the school in the Bank of England Interest Rate Challenge at the Lord Haldon Hotel, Dunchideock.

The Physics department's three L6 SciCast teams have all distinguished themselves in the Institute of Physics' national competition, which is the successor to Paper Clip Physics and involves the preparation of an ICT presentation to bring to life a law of Physics for the non-specialist.

    CROSSING CLUB
The Crossing Club staged a mock trial after school in the Drama Studio, featuring a visiting solicitor, Mr David Charlesworth, of Michelmores, as the judge and pupils (for the prosecution: Julian Frazer and Ollie Wannell; for the defence: Charlie Taverner and Jonathan Evans-Gavhure) and staff (Mrs Chrupek and Mr Keyes) as court officers and witnesses. The proceedings were based on a Crown Court Trial. The aim of the event was to introduce pupils to the mechanisms of the legal system and the idea of citizenship in an enjoyable way.

    THE ARTS

    DRAMA
The Middle School play, Bilbo and The Beast, played to three enthusiastic audiences. It was a tall order and a logistical challenge for Miss Jakes to bring the play back to such a high standard after its pre-half-term postponement, but she did so most effectively. The professionalism of the young cast belied their years and their diction and stage presence were most impressive. Mr Strugnell's writing was an original take on the Hobbit legend and blended fable, humour and wit to great effect. He co-directed the play expertly with Miss Jakes, whose excellent choreography of a range of styles showed just how talented our dancers are. The cast's diction and timing were of a very high standard and the stage presence of Lucy Harrison-Prentice, Ben Broughton and George Kay was very impressive. We enjoyed the range of characters embodied by the various pixies and were guided skilfully though the plot by the accomplished narrators, Austin Robison and Tyler Wootton. Freya Houghton was a menacing Gollum and Theo Martin's troll was memorable. Max Brewer stepped in at very short notice to play a troll also. Elvis lived on in the shape of Tom Stokes. Hugh Collins wrote and played a well-crafted musical score for the piece.

    MUSIC
The Associated Board/Trinity/Guildhall music results from December 2008 were amongst the best the school has had. 62 pupils took an exam and all passed, 23 of them with distinction. All eleven pupils taking Trinity/Guildhall exams obtained a distinction. Notable results include Bethany Partridge's Grade 8 distinction 'cello to follow a similar result in singing Grade 8 last term. Artemis CrowleyBrittany Harris and former pupil Richard Robbins all achieved Graded 8 distinction in singing, a tribute to the school's outstanding vocal teaching staff. The school is also well-known for the standard of its string players and brother and sister Fionn and Hannah Connolly both achieved Grade 7 distinction in violin, while Tom Tresidder obtained the same result on the 'cello. Outstanding piano results included Hugh Collins' distinction at Grade 7 and Katie Clark's Grade 8 pass. Chris Furby, taking GCSE music this year, achieved Grade 8 distinction on the drum kit. Rowena Caine has recently attained a Distinction in the Associated Board Grade 8 singing examination, scoring 144/150 marks: this is an outstanding result!

Hannah Partridge has been selected as a member of the main National Youth Choir and will be touring America with the choir in the summer.

Dr Foxall took a group of our senior musicians to give a concert at Sidbury Church in February. Their performance was much appreciated by a large local audience.

Bach's St Matthew Passion was a tremendous experience for all concerned in Dr Foxall's Choral Society swansong. The eight section choir (with pupil and adult sections for each of the four voices), composed of 340 singers including current pupils and staff, parents, friends and former pupils, certainly did justice to Bach's masterpiece, producing a disciplined and emotive rendition of the epic work, which was first performed in 1727. The professional soloists, notably Tom Hobbs as the Evangelist, made a huge impact and the London Bach Ensemble, who played on baroque instruments, brought great authenticity to the sound. It was put together by OE Sarah Humphrys and also featured Mr Gillett and Mr Daldorph. The mini-choir of 20 pupils held its own very effectively and there were small cameo roles for Noah Mosley, Hannah and Bethany Partridge, Rowena Caine and Hugh Collins. Congratulations to Dr Foxall, sectional conductors Mr Daldorph, Mrs Mitchell, Mr Sutton and Mrs Williams and all who sang!

VISITORS TO THE SCHOOL AND EDUCATIONAL EXCURSIONS

Field Day went ahead, despite the inclement weather. The 3rd Form went on a local History walk including visits to the Guildhall and St Nicholas Priory and visited the Underground Passages in Exeter, led by Mr Trelawny; the 4th Form went to Paignton Zoo, led by Mrs Cloke, and the L5 visited either the dry ski slope in Plymouth, led by Mr Willson, or the Bovington Tank Museum and Maiden Castle, led by Mr Sljivic. Mr Daws and Mr Poustie took a group to a climbing centre in North Devon. The RAF section did leadership tasks and shooting at school when their flying was cancelled and the Navy section was split between micro-navigation on Dartmoor and a trip to experience firefighting at HMS Raleigh.

The Duke of Edinburgh groups undertook a First Aid course in school and some navigation and orienteering exercises in preparation for their summer expeditions.

A large audience of Medical Society members welcomed Dr Pete Halestrap, an ENT Registrar from the RD and E, to hear a very constructive talk entitled "So, are 6 years of medical training really worth it?"

The Onatti Theatre Company gave a performance of their play "Cache-cache" to L5 and M5 French pupils.

Our senior Theatre Studies pupils saw a production of Don Giovanni at the Theatre Royal, Plymouth and A View from The Bridge at The Duke of York's Theatre, London.

The pupils visited the Louvre, Orsay, Rodin, Orangerie and saw the Palace of Versailles, the Tour Eiffel, the Montmartre, the Champs Elysées. As well as visiting the Opéra de la Bastille they had a choice of watching Ionesco's Les Chaises or La Cantatrice Chauve and all went to see La Leçon.

Our Sixth Form DT pupils visited Howmet Ltd at Sowton to study industrial production, quality systems and health and safety in a working environment.

Miss Pegg took the U6 RS set to an Ethics conference in Yeovil.

The M5 geographers went to Bristol to study the urban regeneration at the docks and edge-of-town developments at Cribbs Causeway.

Mr Keyes took his senior Classics pupils to Oxford to see a production of Euripides' Hippolytus.

Dr Foxall and his colleagues took a group of senor musicians to a performance of The Marriage of Figaro at The Theatre Royal, Plymouth.

The Sixth Form geographers attended a GA lecture at Wellington School: Professor Bob Allison spoke on the subject: "Hazard, risk and disaster: the consequences of living in dangerous places".

Mr Hunt, Mrs Cloke and Mrs Price took a group of Sixth Form geographers to the London Docklands to undertake urban fieldwork.

Visiting speaker Mrs Elizabeth Burton-Phillips made a strong impression upon a large audience of parents and staff when she spoke regarding the loss of one of her twin sons to a heroin addiction. There is a copy of her book, Mum, can you lend me twenty quid? in the library. It is a worthwhile, if harrowing read.

The English department organised two theatre trips, to Julius Caesar at The Tobacco Factory in Bristol, and Measure for Measure in Plymouth.

Eight L6th and Mr Bone travelled to Bristol for the IoP South West Festival of Physics. There were some good demonstrations including superconducting magnets, muon detectors and applications of liquid nitrogen (the students all briefly put their fingers into the liquid Nitrogen at -196ºC!). Fiona Mabin collected the award for her team's SciCast entry (1st place in the SW).

    HOUSE TOURNAMENT
In the House Basketball competition, the overall winners were Townsend, with Collins second and Acland and Crossing joint third.

The Junior House indoor football competition was won by Crossing, with Townsend second and Raleigh third. The senior competition  was also won by Crossing, with Buller second.

The final of the House Dance competition took place before a packed Assembly Hall. Five Houses danced to the Dolly Parton song 9 to 5. The standard was very high. Buller and Goff finished in joint 3rd place, Acland and Daw shared 2rd place and the event was won by a very well choreographed performance from Crossing. Many thanks to Miss Jakes for running this exhilarating competition.

    SPORT

    CROSS COUNTRY
On Tuesday 3rd March we sent an U13 boys and Girls team to the Stover Cross Country event . In torrential rain and horrendous conditions everyone ran extremely well. Sam Boddington and Donald Comer Calder finished amongst the top runners, a good achievement as they were running a year up. Katie Taverner was our best runner of the day winning a medal for her third place finish in the girls' event.

On Wednesday 4th March Mr Fawkes took a team of 4 senior girls and four senior boys to take part in the daunting Quantock relays, which is a 4 x 2.5 mile relay event. They braved the conditions running in snow and mud.

    FOOTBALL
The U18 football team has had its best ever season. They won four and drew one before Christmas and have had five wins this term. The A Team won the inaugural Isca League, organised by Mr Ashman, which includes fixtures against Blundell's, King's Taunton and Wellington. The captain, David Hood, has represented Devon U18s and Devon Schools. He has also featured in the Express and Echo for his exploits for Tiverton Town U18s, Tiverton Town 1st XI and Witheridge 1st XI.

    GOLF

The U18 indoor team was disappointed not to qualify for the Nationals this year. They finished 3rd in their West of England pool.
The 1st X1 has lacked a little athleticism although their use of space and passing has been good. Since half term the team has found its fluency and had a run of victories. The season was rounded off by an extremely enjoyable tour to Bath where the team comfortably won all 4 matches and played some of their best hockey. In the Devon Cup the team performed well and played very maturely in getting to the semi-final against South Dartmoor. In an excellent game the scoreline was 3-3. After penalty strokes we lost 4-3.
The 2nd X1 has had a difficult season, losing five of its nine matches. In the Devon Cup the U16s did well to get to the semi final but were well beaten by South Dartmoor, who went on to win convincingly
The U15s have struggled to regularly train because of the success of the rugby team. However they finished with an extremely positive display against Wellington winning 5-1 despite one of their strongest players representing the 1st X1 in Bath.
The U14s play some good hockey and show considerable promise for the future. In the Devon Cup they were finalists and played their hearts out upon the University water based pitch. In a close game they were eventually defeated 3-2 by South Dartmoor. Their record is pleasing.
Our U13s have two outstanding players and have put together a string of good results in their first year of playing 11 a side. The team has won 8 of their 10 games. They won the Devon mini hockey competition and are representing Devon at the West of England Tournament on 26th April.
The U12s are undefeated and also played in the Devon mini hockey competition reaching the ¼ finals, but were a year younger than their opponents.

Devon U17: Sean Flynn, Henry Parkin, Jack Pritchard, Chris Towl
Devon U15: Will Harvey, Richie Wilkinson
Devon U14: William Marsh, Tom Poustie, Lucian Smith, Mike Walker

    GIRLS' HOCKEY
At the West of England U16 girls' indoor finals at Cheltenham Ladies' College on Sunday 11 January, the young squad lost 2-4 to Millfield and 0-2 to Clifton College and drew 3-3 with St Antony's, Leweston.
The U14 girls contested the Devon finals at Exeter University, they won two and drew two matches, finishing second in the county.
The U13 and U12 girls played at the Marjons, Plymouth tournament. The U13s played Ivybridge Juniors, winning 5-0. They then beat Exeter School U12s 3-0 and Plymouth Marjons HC 2-0. The U12 girls beat Ivybridge 3-0 and Plymouth Marjons HC 2-0 and finished runners-up. The U13 girls won the tournament. The U11 girls played in their respective tournament, which they also won.
The U13 girls played in the Devon Mini Hockey Championships at St Lukes. They beat Ashmoor 1-0. They beat Mount House 1-0. They beat Culm Valley Hornets 5-1 and Teignmouth 4-2. The last match in the section was against Exe and the girls lost 2-1. They played St Peter's Lympstone and won 1-0. In the final the girls lost 2-1 to Exe HC.

Emmie Giles, Izzy Smith and Amelia Sydenham played for Isca Dragons Ladies HC in the U18 national indoor finals at Birmingham.

The following girls have achieved representative honours this season. They are Sophie Hines, Lucy Parsons and Amelia Sydenham, who have been selected to attend the U15 Junior Regional Performance Centres, Joely Harris  and Claire Richardson,  to attend the U15 Junior Academy Centre and Katie Taverner and Laura Thomas, to attend the U14 Junior Regional Performance Centres. Issy Gibber and Laura Stacey have been selected to attend the Junior Academy Centres.

    Ms Gimber writes:
"We have had an enjoyable and successful season for netball in all age groups and did not have to cancel too many fixtures when it snowed! We have fielded 12 teams this season and have had both A and B team fixtures in all the younger age groups and also fixtures for three senior teams for the first time. Exeter School teams have played a total of 91 matches, winning 48 and scoring 1365 goals!  These results do not include tournaments.
The U18 1st VII are very athletic and skilful and have played 10 matches this term against strong schools, winning  5 and scoring  214 goals and only conceding 158 goals. The 1st team beat Trinity, St Margaret's and Wellington very convincingly. All players have been strong and Amy Glover has been a very consistent shooter and our defence has excelled with Felicity Clarke performing particularly well. It has been very pleasing to have an enthusiastic and committed U18 2nd VII this season who have achieved some excellent results. The 2nd V11 have played 8 this season winning 3 and drawing one 15-15  with Plymouth College. They had outstanding wins 28- 10 against Trinity,  33 - 10 against Kelly and 25 - 11 against St Margaret's. Lauren Partridge has been shooting very well.
The U16 team has played  8 matches this season, with 5 excellent  wins against St Margaret's, St Peter's, Kelly College, Queen's, Taunton and West Buckland. Hannah Gee has played outstandingly at Goal Attack and it has been a great team effort.
The U15 A team has potential with a squad of 10 strong players. The team played 9, winning 4, against St Peter's 12-9, St Margaret's twice and Plymouth College 19-10. They have lost to Q.E., Wellington, Colyton and Kelly. The U15 B team played 3 and had a great win against Plymouth College 24-7. Hattie Helliar has been a very efficient captain and a most effective  Goal Defence.
The U14 A team has played 7, winning 4, against Maynard 29-27, against Kelly 25-23 and also beating St Margaret's and Queen's. The players are improving their agility and team play and Rebecca Glover is an outstanding Goal Attack. The U13 girls have much potential and have been the most successful age group overall. There are more than 10 players strong enough to play for the A team. The U13 A team has won 8 out of 11 matches by very big margins, beating St Margaret's 25-5, Q.E. 18-8, Kelly 22-7, Plymouth College 32-2 and St Peter's, Lympstone 21-4. They also beat St Margaret's, St Peter's and Kings. It is hard to single out individuals as it is a team effort but Lauren Dixie must be commended for her athleticism as Centre. The U13 B team has also had some excellent results, winning 6 out of 9 matches,  They beat  Q.E. 22-2, Kelly 25-5, St Margaret's 19-6 and Plymouth College 24-1 and also beat King Edward's and St Wilfrid's. Lucy Swiggs has been an agile centre and Milly Hines and Eleanor Sharman have been shooting well.
The U12 A team's results do not really reflect its potential. The A team has lost to Wellington, Kelly and St Margaret's  but beat Plymouth College 23-8. The B team lost to Wellington and to Kelly by just one goal but beat St Margaret's 15-5 and Plymouth College 21-2. Emily Ackland and Rebecca Armstrong show much potential.
We enjoyed hosting King Edward's, Bath on Saturday 28 February when we played U12 A, B and C and U11 A and B teams.
In the end of season Exeter Area tournaments, the 1st team came 3rd, the U14 team came 4th, the U13 team won 6 out of 7 matches to finish 2nd, and the U12 team finished 3rd."

    OTHER ACTIVITIES

    CCF
Our RAF cadet team took part in the Ground Training Competition at RAF Lyneham and finished an impressive second overall and thereby qualified for the national finals at RAF Cranwell in March where they finished seventh. There were 12 teams representing all the CCF schools in the South-West. The team finished first in Aircraft Recognition (Andrew Melzer was the top placed individual, with another score of 30/30. It is the fourth successive year in which he has been the highest placed individual cadet). In other categories, the team was placed first in RAF Knowledge, second in Shooting and Drill and third in Leadership.

The RN section has had a very busy term building on the successful  initial training programme for new recruits last term.  All twenty new members of the section passed the Able Seaman's test and are now working on their Naval Proficiency Certificate.  A large proportion of the section received training in fire fighting and damage control at HMS Raleigh and can now be relied upon to deal with any missile strike while at sea.  The remainder proved themselves capable of high quality micro navigation and gourmet cooking in the snows on Dartmoor.

This Easter a group of 30 M5 and L6 Cadets is in Snowdonia for Adventure Training.  They are accompanied by Dr Chapman, Mr Harris, Miss Pegg, Mr Smith and a range of civilian instructors and support staff.  The cadets will enjoy three days of demanding walking and navigation training and  a day climbing at the Joint Services Indoor Climbing Centre before heading off on a three day expedition in the mountains.

    CHESS
After 9 years as holders we were outclassed in this year's Devon Bloodworth competition, losing to Newton Abbot and Torquay Boys Grammar School, despite playing well. After about the same length of time, we finally managed to win Division 4 of the Exeter & District League for adults.  In a very tight division, 5 of the 6 matches between us, ISCA Juniors and Seaton were drawn and were won the remaining match. Team players were: Adam Cox, James Rampersad, Tom Senior, Adam Chau, Matt Warner, Jack Hunter, Jevon Whitby, with particular mention of Tom Senior who played in all 8 matches. The Sixth Form girls' Charity Rugby Match was played in a good spirit. The L6 girls beat the U6 in a narrow contest and raised £118.53.

    THE DEBATING SOCIETY
We hosted the regional round of the English Speaking Union Mace debating competition in the Andrews Hall. There were debaters from five schools and the event was won by a strong pair from Millfield. The House Debating final took place in the Andrews Hall on the evening of Monday 16 March. It was contested by teams from Drake, Townsend, Raleigh and Crossing, who had all qualified from the series of lunchtime heats. The audience raised questions during the Floor debate and this helped to enhance the high standard of debating for the event. In the end, Drake House were judged the overall winners. The team of Noah Mosley and Jonathan Evans-Gavhure spoke on the subject of legalising performance-enhancing drugs in sport, raising a number of interesting and provocative ethical perspectives.
