Exeter School Kicks Off
Rugby clinic with Stuart Alred and Tony Yapp
On Wednesday 30th January, pupils from Exeter School's senior rugby teams were privileged to welcome experienced players Stuart Alred and Tony Yapp on to their home pitch for a kicking training session.
The two sportsmen have impressive credentials. Stuart set a club record at Cornish All Blacks for most penalty goals in a season and has contributed strongly to Exeter University 1st XV and England's university team. Tony is currently Exeter Chiefs' record point scorer and has represented England 'A' and the Barbarians.
Both players are also RFU qualified coaches and have benefited greatly from full access to the methods of Stuart's father Dave Alred who is renowned as the world's best kicking coach.
At the kicking clinic the eight Exeter School pupils were given valuable insights into the foundations of punting. Andy Mason, Director of Sport, explained that the punt is an important skill that every kicker should master:
"No matter what position you play, it is worth having a go practising the punt kick. It's a crucial part of attack and defence. That is why we are so delighted to have this opportunity to learn from distinguished professionals and further develop the elite end of our rugby programme."
Tony Yapp commented on what the session meant to him.
"Over the years Stuart and I have found Dave's Alred's kicking methods invaluable in helping us in this vital area of the game and, therefore, we are very excited about being able to pass on our knowledge to these young promising players of the future."
