    Dear Parents,

It has been a very good term for the school, with many highlights, even in such disappointing weather. Next term will be busy, as ever, and the important dates for your diaries are listed in the calendar, which is also enclosed. Pupils will be given their own copy on the first day of next term.

    ACADEMIC

Tom Leger has been selected as only one of five young British scientists to take part in this summer's Professor Harry Messel International Science School in Sydney in July. This is the 35th annual gathering of young scientists from around the world. Given the prestige and competition, Tom's selection is a very impressive achievement.

In the UKMT Junior Mathematical Challenge, which took place in April, our 3rd and 4th form pupils attained 14 Gold, 33 Silver and 43 Bronze certificates. Jonathan Schranz was judged "Best in School" and his fellow gold award winners were: Matt Clarke, Will Harvey, Andrew Parnell, Dan Mortimer-Jones, Cameron Starling, Freddie Ashford, Jack Goldsworthy (4th Form) and Henry Hoult, Lewis Molyneux, Alastair Nowill, Felix Stephenson, Lucy Harrison-Prentice and Tom Senior (3rd Form).

Dr Tyrer took a 3rd Form team of Lucy Harrrison-Prentice (Captain), Lulu Chrupek, Eleni Greenwood, Lewis Molyneux and Patrick Baker to the Junior Schools Challenge competition at Torquay BGS. They lost 160-220 to a Year 8 team from Torquay BGS in the regional final.

Mr Ricketts took his team of Cathryn Buechel, Chris Clay, Jack Goldsworthy and Clemency Tilley to the Salters' Festival of Chemistry at Plymouth University. They had an enjoyable day, finishing second in the afternoon event, the 'University Challenge' and experiencing a demonstration by faculty staff.

A team of 4th formers, Cathryn Buechel, Jack Goldsworthy, Jon Schranz and Gaby Smallwood participated in the Team Mathematics Challenge at Exmouth Community College. The event was contested by mixed Year 8 and 9 teams, so was good practice for next year.

Congratulations to Mr Tayler and the History department, who recently won a Good Schools' Guide award for the best performance at AS History by boys in an independent school in 2006.

GCSE, AS & A LEVEL RESULTS

The A level results are published at school on 16 August, and the GCSEs on 23 August.  All stamped-addressed envelopes left with my secretary will be posted the day the results arrive. We hope to have individual results available from 9.00am on these mornings.  If you would like results e-mailed, please leave your address with my secretary. AS level results will also be available for the L6 on 16 August, but not until 11.30am.  I am most grateful to our examination officers, Mr Frost, Mr Beckwith and Mr Fryer, for their outstanding work in the administration of the examination system.

    ARTS

    MUSIC

The informal brass concert focussed on twentieth century European music, with Hindemith surprisingly prominent. Jack McFarlane-Shopes gave a fascinating account of part of his tuba sonata and Tom Burchell played the first movement of the trumpet sonata. Jamie Oliver and Henry Cowling show excellent promise on the French horn. Patrick Friel and Hugo Marino produced some fine toned trombone performances.

The popular Spring Concert featured the Junior Orchestra, various GCSE Ensembles, the Middle School String Quartet, Senior Jazz Band, the most impressive Middle School Choir and the powerful Concert Orchestra. Particular highlights were the stirring finale by the latter, Noah Mosley and Nick Horne's piano duet, Katie Symons and Amy Glover's flute duo, Rowena Caine's Handel solo, accompanied by the string quartet, Michael Dawson's cello solo and Matthew Pauley's trumpet performances.

The informal vocal concert was one of the most successful of its kind for many years. Artemis Crowley showed remarkable virtuosity in her solo. Matthew Pauley sang an assured bass solo with a relaxed sense of fun. Richard Robbins demonstrated the lightning progress as a tenor singer he has made this year. Debbie Bazeley engaged the audience with real stage presence. The highlight was the well-projected singing of Brittany Harris.

A small Sixth Form music group, led by Eline Caine and accompanied by Iona Cairns, Felix Bush and Ed Wilkinson, entertained disabled children at the West of England School for Children with Little or No Sight.

The Water Aid concert at St David's Church involved four of our major musical groups. The evening began with a spirited performance of Bach's Brandenburg Concerto no 4 in G, with impressive solos by Richard Hobson (violin) and Helen Mahoney, James Puddicombe and Harry Parham-Connolly (flute). The Chamber Choir and Brass Ensemble came together for a moving rendition of Purcell's Funeral Sentences with March and Canzona for the funeral of Queen Mary. The Chamber Orchestra then delighted the audience with the first movement of Mozart's Concerto no 13 in C, with a piano solo by Sophia Gibber, and after the interval, the Chamber Choir was sublime in its beautifully judged Lassus and Bruckner church music. The finale featured Patrick Friel on the trombone in Romero's Trombosis and a wonderful Symphony Orchestra performance of Dvorak's New World Symphony (1st movement).

The Jazz Concert featured Mr Bowen's Impro Group and Mr Painter's Senior Jazz Band. It was a most impressive set of performances with a high degree of professionalism. Patrick Friel has been accepted after nationwide auditions for the National Youth Jazz summer school.

A number of our pupils played in Mrs Fiona McLean's South West Camerata concert at St David's Church in Newton Abbot, putting on a strong baroque programme, featuring Vivaldi's Four Seasons. They were: Katie Clark, Sam Clarke, Hugh Collins, Tom Colville, Tom Leger, Richard Robbins, Tom Tresidder and Flora Zeman.

At a high quality Junior Chamber Concert after school in the Chapel, ten pupils played either a solo or in duets or trios. Junior School pupils Hannah and Fionn Connolly gave a most impressive performance of a Bach concerto for two violins. Alex Mabin showed what remarkable progress he has made in a year. Bethany Cowling is clearly developing a fine tone and Tom Tresidder was the expert solo 'cellist for all the larger ensembles.

The summer concert at St Peter's Church in Budleigh Salterton was very well received by a local audience. The Chamber Orchestra played the Brandenburg concertos Nos. 3 and 4 and Tommy Purkis performed Beethoven's "Romance No. 2 in F" with great sensitivity. The Chamber Choir reprised the Lassus and Bruckner pieces and the Vocal Ensemble closed the proceedings with three short numbers.

We received some very good Associated Board results. There were 49 passes, including 19 merits and 8 distinctions. Notable results were: Hugh Collins (M5): distinctions in Grade 5 double bass and Grade 6 piano, Katie Clark (M5): Grade 7 merit, violin and Grade 7 merit, piano, Hugo Marino (L5): Grade 7 distinction, trombone, John Baldock (M5): Grade 8, piano, Tom Leger (L6): Grade 8 merit, piano.

    ART

Mr Mason and Mr Frampton took the L6 Artists to the degree show by the graduating Plymouth University finalists.

The Summer Exhibition in the Andrews Hall was well received at a private viewing and the work remained on display for the rest of the term. Some exhibits will be loaned shortly for display at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital.

    DRAMA

The performance and moderation of the devised and scripted A2 Theatre Studies pieces took place in the Drama Studio. Mr and Mrs Chrupek were very pleased with the excellent range and quality of the performances on both nights, which were well attended by parents, staff and friends.

Brittany Harris' excellent production of "Once On This Island", entirely directed, staged and performed by pupils, played to three appreciative audiences, raising funds for the Romilly Forshall charity.

Jessica Cooke has attained a Distinction in the Gold Medal LAMDA acting exam outside school.

    DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY

Another fine annual show took place in the Design Technology department. There was a pleasing range of work from GCSE to A level. From the U6, Nick Penn's outboard motor stand, Sophie Merrett's lighting display system and Peter York's water polo goalposts were all memorable. Tom Harrill's AS project was a large display stand, commissioned by a local skateboard supplier, and Iona Cairns and Iona Harris displayed impressive textile pieces. From the U5, Charles Oxenham's guitar stand, Hanna Skillern's cradle and Brendan Spokes' tennis ball-gathering device caught the eye.

    SPORT

    ARCHERY

Ben Glover attended the National Archery meeting at Lilleshall from 27-29 June: this is the UK's premier tournament for adults and he shot alongside many national and Olympic archers.

    ATHLETICS

21 pupils were selected to represent Exeter and District. After some strong performances at the Exeter Arena on Thursday 24 May, the following pupils represented Exeter & East Devon Schools in the Devon Schools County Athletics Championships on Saturday 9 June:

Junior Boys: Ali Omari: 200m (2nd) and Relay (2nd), Ollie Bedford: Long Jump (1st), Chris Furby: High Jump (6th). Junior Girls: Hannah Gee: 100m (5th), Kirsten Berggren: Javelin (7th)

Senior Boys: Edwin Cawthron: 3000m (1st)

James, Will, Ollie, Edwin and Ali represented Devon in the SW Championships at Yeovil on 16 June. Sadly, all the House Athletics events were rained off.

At the County Schools' Athletics Day at Exeter Arena the results were:

    3rd Form Boys 5th L5th Form Boys 3rd
    3rd Form Girls 3rd L5th Form Girls 3rd
    4th Form Boys 2nd M5th Form Boys 3rd
    4th Form Girls 2nd M5th Form Girls 3rd

    CANOEING

The Canoe Club carried out white-water work at the Welsh National Kayaking Centre on the River Tryweryn, near Bala, in April. The team split into two groups: one was the five intermediate paddlers (Cameron Clark, Dan Barnes, Jon Watson, Chris Ripper and Chris Mason). They all made huge steps forward in their kayaking and river-running skills. The 'advanced' Peru expedition group had a weekend of training under the guidance of Mr Ed Cornfield, one of the world's top kayaking coaches. This included a number of river rescue scenarios, risk assessment and leadership training exercises. A group led by Mr Scott leaves for Peru on 15 July.

U5 Charles Pidgeon and M5 Dan Barnes, Chris Mason, Chris Ripper and Jon Watson have been awarded their 4-star BCU kayaking awards.

    CRICKET

A total of 39 games has been played by the school teams so far this summer, 25 of which have been won, 13 lost and 1 drawn.

The most successful teams have been at the top and bottom of the school. The U12 squad has demonstrated a great deal of talent and enthusiasm for the game and we have great hopes for the team in the future. The U13 XI reached the semi-finals of the Devon Cup, which will now be played in September. The 1st XI played some tough competitive cricket this summer, including tough challenges against the MCC, and the Haberdashers' touring team. The 1st XI has been captained impressively by Gary Chappell, who has been an outstanding cricketer for the 1st XI for three years, and will be missed next season. This season's young cricket professional is Mr Rob Wass, who hails from Western Australia and has played for South Perth Cricket Club. He is currently playing for Exeter CC.

    GIRLS' CRICKET

Our U15 team, captained by Emmie Giles, won the Queen's College, Taunton festival in May.

    HOCKEY

Every summer the U18 girls are entered in a friendly adult summer hockey league at St Luke's High School. This keeps them fit preparing them for the autumn term. During the six matches about 30 M5-U6 girls will have played. Next season will be particularly important for girls' hockey, with the tour to South Africa taking place in Summer 2008.

    HORSE RIDING

At the SW U25 Regional Dressage competition just after Easter, Rob Trobridge won the B Test Squad. He had a very successful weekend at the international U21 dressage

competition in Ireland. He entered four classes, two of which counted for the team competition. The English team for which he was riding finished fourth out of ten.  Rob was the overall Junior (U18) Medium Champion.

    PENTATHLON

Will Cummings has been selected to join the World Class Athlete Programme from this summer. He will therefore train with pre-Olympic squads and his profile as a future international pentathlete is enhanced. He took part in the West Midlands Open event, winning the run and finishing second overall.

    ROUNDERS

The girls have had a successful season. We are continuing to produce England standard rounders players. Teams enter the Millfield tournaments and have played in the U13 tournament recently, beating Clifton and Allhallows to reach the semi-finals, losing narrowly to Port Regis. The U12 girls took part in the Millfield tournament on Saturday 16 June.   The girls lost to Millfield 4-11, and to Allhallows 2-5 and beat Bristol 10-6.  They came 3rd in their section and joint 6th overall. The U13 girls also compete in the JET National Rounders competition. They beat St Michael's, Tawstock and lost to Taunton School in the second round.

    SWIMMING

Mr Moon hosted a very well-supported girls' gala: a strong Maynard team won the event, with St Margaret's second and our girls third overall.

Samantha Ford competed in Somerset in Synchronised Swimming and her team won the prestigious Walsall Trophy. They also beat Rushmoor, the top synchro team in Britain, to win the Wales Synchro Championships 2007.

A charity marathon swim is being planned for September

    TEN PIN BOWLING

Michael Walker was selected for the England U16 ten-pin bowling trials.

    BOYS' TENNIS

Alex Joss was captain of tennis this year and was commended for the standard of his play and hosting ability. Ed Grieg-Gran partnered Alex and they played well as a pair. Edwin Cawthron and Freddy King generally played together and formed a tough-to-beat partnership.  Although the club has not gathered as many wins as it would wish, most of the matches were close. The seniors had a good win over Plymouth College and were pleased to beat Trinity School at both U15 and U13 levels.

    GIRLS' TENNIS

The U18 girls' tennis team started the season with an excellent 7-2 win over West Buckland School. In the Aberdare Cup, the U18s reached the Devon semi final. They lost to Maynard in the semi final, although the excellent captain, Carla Keenan, won her singles. The U15 team played well in the Nestle League beating Great Torrington 6-0 and St Margaret's 6-0 but losing the exciting Devon final 2-4 to the Maynard. The U13 team had a very strong section and lost to Exmouth 2-4, Colyton and Trinity, Teignmouth.  Devon Schools' U13 champion Alice Tolson is to be congratulated for playing well in her singular matches.

    OTHER ACTIVITIES

    TEN TORS

The 1633 Challenge on Dartmoor enabled all our M5 training team for Ten Tors to experience a full 35-mile route two weeks before the main event. In very poor and worsening weather conditions, the first day or the Ten Tors Challenge presented difficult walking. The organizers decided on Saturday evening to terminate the event and began to evacuate the walkers from first light on Sunday. This was obviously a great disappointment, following the huge amount of training and preparation that had been put in by young people and staff teams from all over the country, but safety was paramount. Our teams had made good progress: the Exeter School 35-mile team reached Tor 7 at 18.02 on Saturday, the Okement Ramblers  reached Tor 7 at 18.23 and the Blackdown Hikers were on their way to Tor 8. The 45-mile team, led by Will Blackshaw, camped at Tor 6 on Saturday and the 55-mile team, led by Jack Renninson, was on their way to Tor 6. The Army made an excellent job of the evacuation.

The Jubilee Challenge took place from Friday evening and through Saturday. The Army CCF provided 14 cadets, led by Mr Moon and Miss Pegg, to accompany the disabled young people on their own challenge.

    COMMUNITY SERVICE GROUP

The Social Services outing went to Buckfast Abbey and Widecombe in the Moor on Field Day.

    DUKE OF EDINBURGH

Tom Burchell and Hannah Partridge have completed their Silver D of E awards.

This summer, Mr Clark, Dr Houghton and Mr Mason will lead a 10-day Silver Qualifying Expedition to the Sierra de Gredos in Spain. The staff took seven M5 pupils on their Silver D of E training on Exmoor, in spite of the poor weather.

    CCF

Harriet Trayler-Clarke has been awarded an RAF Sixth Form Scholarship and University Bursary.

In late June Mrs Wilson and Mr Clark (as assessor) led seven M5 RAF cadets on a D of E expedition to Woodbury Common and Bicton. After spending a year training and a practice expedition in April, they successfully completed their Bronze Award assessment in very wet conditions.

Mr Bone took 8 RAF cadets, who are working through their gliding induction course, to RMB Chivenor, in North Devon for a 30-40 minute flight in a Vigilant motor glider.

Mr Bone and Mr Donne took a group of RAF cadets to camp at RAF Leuchars near Dundee in early July and Mrs Wilson took another group to RAF Linton-on-Ouse in the last week of term.

The Royal Navy section will have its camp at Stoke Gabriel from 13-20 July and the Army section will join a camp at Chickerell from 14-20 July.

    SHOOTING

Mr Donne and his shooting team have again won the prestigious Assegai Trophy which they captured in 2002 and 2005. At the Devon County Target Rifle Dinner, the team collected various trophies: the team led by Sanjay Mortimer and Mike Snell won the adult Division 3 and the team led by Ben Lewis and Sam Huish, with members David Rowell and James Barrows, won Division 7.

The shooting team also won the Mere Cup on Rogiet Moor in South Wales, picking up all three trophies and eleven of the fourteen individual medals being contested at the event!

    BUSINESS GAMES

Mr Walker took our team of Caitlin Banks, Charlie Palmer and Bob Sibley to the Ogden Trust Business Game regional competition at Torquay Boys' Grammar School. The team finished runners-up and progress to the regional final in September.

Mr Walker also designed and led a challenge for eight groups of L6 pupils which involved the ethical redevelopment of a site near Exeter Quay. The Lower Sixth Business Game was won by the Key Cookery School project, whose presenters were Barnaby Bowles-Bray, Iona Harris and Mike Thuell. The media advertisement, judged by Mr Moss-Gibbons, was won by Goccia and the visual display, judged by Mr J. Mason, was won by Global Warehouse.

    CHARITIES

The summer mufti day raised almost £500 for the Canoe Club's Peru children's charity.

    LIFESAVING

Kristina Pill has won two awards (one regional, one national) from The Lifesaving Society for her commitment to training young lifesavers. The school has won The Hutchings Cup, as the school that trained the most lifesavers in Devon in 2006. Congratulations to Mr Davidson, Mr Ranft and the pupils involved! The following L6 pupils have passed their Bronze Medallion Lifesaving Award and their Life Support 1 Resuscitation Award this term: Tom Layland, Spencer Barnes, Will Blackshaw, Tom Bradley, Tom Colville, Tim Clitherow, Clare Rogers, Sophie Hainsworth, Tom Sharpe, Mike Thuell, Peter Davidson and Richard Straughan. 11 Staff also passed the test.

    OTHER INFORMATION

    SPEECH DAY

Please note that Speech Day will take place at 2 p.m. on Thursday 20 September. Attendance at Speech Day will be expected of all members of the Sixth Form and prize-winners. There will be a half-day for those below the Sixth Form who are not prize-winners. Further details of the day's arrangements will follow by letter early next term.

    TALKS AND VISITS

At Easter the following trips took place:

    • Mr Harris and colleagues Mr Moon, Dr Chapman, Mr  Bone, Mrs Cloke and Mr Ranft had a very successful time on the tri-service CCF adventure training in Cumbria.

    • Mr Goward took the U6 politicians to Berlin for four days for a cultural tour, which included visits to several key historical sites including Checkpoint Charlie, Brandenburg Gate and Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp.

    • Mrs Fenner, Mr Keyes and Mrs Wilson were very pleased with the homestay Spanish study trip to Andalucía, which included daily language tuition and several cultural visits, notably to Cordoba.

    • Mr Allan and Mr Birch accompanied the Junior Christian Union group on a week's activity holiday at the Riovida centre in Alicante.

    • Mr Willson and colleagues Miss Pegg, Ms Gimber, Mrs Marsh, Mr Hanson, Mr Boddington and Mr Daws led a successful ski trip to Alpe d'Huez.  The pupils impressed with their good behaviour and sense of fun.

The L6 Geographers, led by Mr Davidson and Mrs Cloke, conducted some useful fieldwork on the River Lyn on Exmoor. The Geography department also took the 3rd Form to Dartmoor to carry out fieldwork in preparation for the summer examination. Mr Davidson, Mr Sljivic and Mrs Stevens recently accompanied the L6 Geographers to examine coastal defence systems at Lyme Regis.

Costa Rica dive training for this summer's expedition, led by Mr Moon and Miss Pegg went very well. 32 pupils and 3 staff successfully completed the theory and confined water aspects of the PADI course and are now ready to complete the open water dives in Costa Rica.

BSES: We have four representatives on this summer's expeditions: Signe Hulbert (Madagascar), Alan Robertson (Madagascar), Harriet Trayler-Clarke (Amazon Region of Peru) and Clare Rogers (Greenland).

Mr Moon and Mrs Goswell took the L6 Textiles pupils on a useful site visit to Heathcoat's Factory, Tiverton.

On Field Day, the 3rd Form visited Cheddar, the 4th Form went to the @Bristol Science museum, the L5 were either at the Fleet Air Arm museum in Yeovilton or on Dartmoor and the CCF undertook a range of activities: the Army section was on Woodbury Common, the Navy was sailing off Exmouth and the RAF went to Colerne. A group of senior musicians visited Chagford Primary School to play for the children there.

The L6 post-AS level programme was very worthwhile. The UCAS session, led by Mr Chitnavis and Heads of House, achieved a good deal. Mr Allen assembled a most impressive array of speakers for the Ethics Conference and the L6 contributed positively to group and plenary discussion. The Business Game challenged the year group and offered them a valuable and competitive team experience. Mr Hektor Krome spoke to the year group on the merits of Gap year travel and Oxford Governor Dr Martin Grossel gave a fascinating lecture to the L6 Chemists on nanotechnologies.

    OPEN EVENING

The Open Evening on 11 July, celebrating the year's work, was very well attended. A similar occasion, emphasising entrance procedures, takes place on Wednesday 3 October.
