    Dear Parents,

Thank you very much for your customary generous support of so much that the school has done this term. We have been most grateful for your attendance at concerts, the school play and sports fixtures, and for your specialist help at the Careers Convention, as visiting speakers, with Sixth Form interviews and as rugby medical support. The Spring Term calendar is enclosed with this mailing. Please also visit our website www.exeterschool.org.uk which is regularly updated with our news and contains downloadable letters to parents.

    TRIAL AND MODULAR EXAMINATIONS

The trial examinations for U5 pupils begin on Wednesday 3 January.  Most U6 formers will be sitting AS and A2 modules also. Please note that there will be no formal lessons for the U6 on 23 and 24 January, owing to the large number of pupils involved in modular examinations on those days.

    ARTS

    DRAMA

"Oh! What A Lovely War" provided a moving, fast-paced and thought-provoking senior production. Moving from light humour through colourful spectacle to poignant pathos, it was an important success which offered both entertainment and a biting satirical look at the human cost of the Great War. OE Adam West's talented group of musicians performed wonderfully well and there was strong technical direction from Ed Grieg-Gran and John Harris. It was a piece in which a large number of the school's senior actors and musicians were able to display their talents. Richard Robbins was a beguiling narrator and link man, Jack Renninson was a suitably imperious and misguided Haig, Nick Littler impressed in huffy military guise and Ben Lewis, Charles Pidgeon, Henry Renninson and James McLaughlin played various character parts with good comic timing. Iona Harris choreographed the play with great confidence and enabled leading dancers such as Jessica Cooke, Deborah Bazeley, Jessica Steiner and Tom Lyons (who was dancing in a school production for the first time). There were strong vocal contributions from Lizzie Tolson, Eline Caine, Jack Dean, Matt Watson and Richard Hills-Ingyon and a host of supporting individuals. Numerous members of staff contributed their expertise and Mrs Giles again triumphed in the costume department. Mr and Mrs Chrupek deserve particular congratulations for this splendid production.

Miss Stevens' Middle School production of "The Arabian Nights" is currently in rehearsal and takes place between 1 and 3 February in the main hall.

Jessica Cooke achieved a Grade 6 distinction in the LCM Musical Theatre examination this summer.

Ewan Harvey and Ollie Shaw starred in the Leonard School of Dramatic Arts' production of Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" at the Barnfield Theatre.

    MUSIC

The informal woodwind concert featured 14 players, from the Junior School to L6. There were memorable performances from Francis Oliver, Tom Grennan-Cruise, Katie Symons and Harriet Beasley, who finished the concert with a sensitive rendition of a Saint-Saens Sonata.

Musicians Tom Robbins, Tom Colville, Tom Leger, Katie Clark, Flora Zeman and Hugh Collins performed in a children's community concert in Cornwall and an evening concert with Mrs McLean's South West Camerata. All the above plus Tom Tresidder went to Knowles Hill School and performed the first classical concert there for 16 years.

The Chamber Concert delighted a full Chapel audience. The programme was strong and varied, with a series of impressive solos: Barnaby Bowles-Bray sang a Handel piece with great sensitivity, Tommy Purkis's Kreisler violin performance was stunning and Harrie Dumenil continued her impressive soprano career with a Faure aria. There were splendid contributions also from Patrick Friel on the trombone and Michael Dawson, who made his debut playing the school organ. The Middle School and Senior String Quartets did great credit to the work of Mr Gillett and Tom Leger's Vivaldi movement reminded us of the impact that Mrs McLean is having on our strings players. The evening concluded with an outstanding set from the Chamber Choir, capped by a mesmerizing performance of Tavener's "Hymn to the Mother of God."

The informal piano concert featured twenty five young pianists ranging from Form One to L6. Highlights were the performances by Katie Noble, Hugh Collins and Tom Leger.

Helen Mahoney, Patrick Friel, Harriet Trayler Clarke, Hugo Marino, Matthew Pauley, Harrison Holder and Francis Oliver played an important part in the Devon Youth Jazz Orchestra's recent appearance at the Teignmouth Jazz Festival under the leadership of Mr Moore.

The National Trust Christmas Concert was a major event for many of the school's musicians, with some Christmas readings led by Mr Keyes. The packed Cathedral audience was delighted by the Symphony Orchestra's premiere of Mr Painter's "Christmas Prelude". The three major choirs sang beautifully and Emily Dixon's solo in the Senior Choir's Coventry Carol was memorable. Mr Sutton conjured another stirring performance from the Chamber Choir. Other highlights were the Chamber Orchestra's performance of Handel's "Sheep may safely graze" which included a wonderful performance by solo sopranos Hannah and Bethany Partridge, and the Brass Ensemble's Shepherd's Pipe Carol.

The school Christmas concert this week involved over a third of our pupils, with the Junior, Concert and Symphony Orchestras all in top form. The Impro Group set a relaxed tone and there were slick vocal items from the Middle School Choir and the Senior Jazz Band. A number of soloists made a great impact, notably Richard Robbins, who stole the show by singing Mel Brooks' Betrayed, pianist Nick Horne's Maple Leaf Rag, Matthew Pauley's trumpet sonata and flautist Amy Glover's rendition of Handel's Allegro. The Symphony Orchestra's triumphant finale featured John Williams' stirring Theme from ET.

Next term the Choral Society will perform Karl Jenkins' The Armed Man in Exeter Cathedral on Thursday 22 March, with rehearsals beginning on Tuesday 16 January. All pupils and parents are encouraged most warmly to take part!

    SPORT

    ARCHERY

Ben Glover is now Regional Field Archery Champion for his age. At Derby in a British Record Status Clout shoot, he took 2 national records. At the National Clout Championships in Harrogate, he became National Champion for his age and bowstyle, setting a further two national records. He is the Rutland and Leicestershire and the Shropshire County Open Clout Champion.

    BOWLING

Michael Walker bowled well in the Devon U18 round and qualified for the county team by finishing second.

    CANOEING

Mr Scott and his biggest overseas group of kayakers to date had a great time in Norway, attempting grade 4 runs on the Sjoa, the Ulla Falls and climbing the country's highest peak in a white-out.

Sam Freeman and Tom Sharpe were selected to train with the GB squad in northern Spain this summer, as part of the U16 sprint development camp. They competed in the national marathon championships, winning silver medals in the U16 K2 event over 8 miles. They have been selected to join the inaugural National Talent Orientation Camp at Loughborough University in January. They will receive specialist advice and mentoring, attending workshops with other leading athletes and working with Olympians and other coaches.

The canoeing marathon from Birmingham to London was another epic of endurance: our paddlers finished their 137-mile, 166-lock odyssey in under 30 hours.
The team had aimed to raise £2500 for the Peru's Challenge charity: the final grand total was £4,177. This brings the Canoe Club's fundraising total in the last 10 years to over £15,000.

2 and 3 Star courses were very popular this term. Monday after-school club sessions provided quite a logistical challenge, with more than 50 canoeists out on the water. 8 L6 pupils went on a Coach Training weekend and successfully completed the first stage of their Level 2 coach training. Rob Hinds, Chris Parry, Tom Colville, Ed Greig-Gran, and Tom Pidgeon competed in the Exe Descent, completing the very challenging 19 mile white-water race in good time and all finishing in the top 10. Rob Hinds and Ed Greig-Gran entered the invitation-only freestyle rodeo Open event under floodlights at Flowerpots Weir and Rob finished second. All of this bodes well for the Peru expedition next summer!

    CROSS COUNTRY

The Exeter and District vs East Devon fixture saw a tough field but Edwin Cawthron came 1st, David Bird 4th, Matt Betney 5th, Amelia Davies 2nd and Helen Smith 2nd in their respective races.

    FOOTBALL

The U18 XI has had a promising start to the season. They had a very encouraging 2-2 draw away at Clyst Vale. This was followed up with a convincing 8-1 victory against an under-strength Teignmouth Community College. They then lost 3-6 to Torquay BGS after leading 3-2 at half-time, and beat the staff 5-0 on 12 December.

    BOYS' INDOOR HOCKEY

The U16 team won the divisional competition, beating Millfield, Ashmoor, Taunton, King's Bruton and drawing with Wellington. They have therefore qualified for the National Finals at Aldersley, Wolverhampton in January, which is an outstanding achievement. The U18 boys finished 3rd in their indoor regional pool.

Georgia Reece, Freija Mendrik and Rebecca Glover have been selected to attend active sport coaching.

    NETBALL

Although the Autumn Term is the hockey term for 4th to M5 girls, there have been a number of netball matches and tournaments. The U12A & B teams have had good wins against St. Luke's and QE but have lost to West Buckland. The U13s and U15s have competed in the new Ashfords League. The U13s have had two wins and a draw, but the U15s have lost two matches. The U14, U16 and U18s entered the National Schools' tournaments in their age groups. The U14s finished 5th out of 10. The U16s were placed 4th out of 7 and the U18s were placed 5th. Hannah Gee has played for the East Devon U14 team.

    ROUNDERS

Congratulations to the following girls, who have been selected for England squads this year:

    U15                  Lauren Partridge
    U14                  Alice Johnson
    U13                  Amelia Sydenham

    RUGBY

The 1st XV squad had a good trip to Twickenham before the start of term, followed by a training camp at the River Dart Adventure Park.  It has been a challenging season for the team, given that only the Captain, Michael Keough, remained from last year's 1st XV. Nonetheless, the team contested the semi-final of the Devon Cup. James Harris has made an important contribution to attacking play. The 2nd XV has maintained good form and has fielded a large squad. Despite small playing numbers, Mr Mason's U16 XV has had a pleasing number of wins. The school's top team has been Mr Poustie's U15 XV, which is unbeaten to date in 15 matches, and has enjoyed a good Devon Cup run. The team is in the semi-final of the tournament, which it won in 2004 and 2005. In the national Daily Mail Cup, the team has reached the last 16, with Millfield to play early next year. The U14 team has battled hard in a challenging season and the U13 team has made a good impression, with some memorable tries from Alec Wheatley and Daniel Wride. The U12 boys have made a promising start to their rugby careers at the school under the expert eye of Mr Wilcock.

    SAILING

Harrison Reece and his sailing partner became the National Junior and Youth Mirror Sailing champions.  They came 6th in the European Open Championships, out of a fleet of 134 boats. Dan Jacobs was very successful in his sailing last summer: he finished 2nd overall, crewing for his brother in the Hornets class at the European Championships at Sandwich Bay in August.

    SHOOTING

Mr Donne and his team met with much success at Bisley: Sanjay Mortimer distinguished himself and topped several days' rankings, qualifying for the GB squad again. Michael Snell shot for Devon Juniors in the inter-county match at Budleigh Farm Ranges.  The Devon Team won and he picked up two team medals. Our CCF cadets finished 2nd of 18 teams in the SW Skill at Arms meeting at Bulford Ranges in Wiltshire. Sanjay Mortimer was the top-scoring cadet in the whole meeting. For the first time in recent years we entered a team in the Ffennell competition, which is for all types of cadets with shooting teams throughout the Commonwealth. It is shot with small-bore match rifles, as a postal competition with outside witnesses of the matches. The team were runners-up, receiving silver medals struck by the Royal Mint.

On Sunday 19 November our team went to RAF Innsworth, Gloucester for the South and West Ground Training Competition. Despite being a young team they performed very well, winning the shooting outright and coming runners up in aircraft recognition and the leadership assessment. The team also excelled in the drill competition. Overall the team was fifth, with Andrew Melzer attaining the highest aircraft recognition score.

    SQUASH

Ben Rodgers won the Devon U17 tournament, at which Jonny Telford won the 3rd/4th place play-off. Ben is now ranked number 11 in the U17 national standings.

    TRIATHLON

Will Cummings won the SW Triathlon U19 Competition and has qualified for the national finals this autumn.

    OTHER ACTIVITIES

    WWI  BATTLEFIELDS TRIP

During half-term 44 L5 pupils and 5 staff, led by Mr Trelawny, embarked on a most successful field trip to the First World War Battlefields of Northern France and Belgium. The group was greatly moved when it visited the Ypres Salient and saw the contrasting memorials at the sombre German Langemark cemetery which contains the remains of over 44,000 soldiers and then the 11,871 white marble gravestones at Tyne Cot British Cemetery at Passchendaele. A further 34,888 names of those who died at Ypres but whose bodies were never found are recorded on a memorial at the rear. This and the visit to see the Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate in Ypres  brought home the scale of human suffering on the Western Front. Similar feelings were encountered in visits to the Newfoundland and Vimy Ridge Memorials on the Somme. The children got a feel for life in the trenches at these sites, along with the unique museum and preserved trenches at Sanctuary Wood, Ypres. The trip also included visits to Tournai and Bruges.

    HADRIAN'S WALL TRIP

Also during half-term, 21 pupils from the Upper 5th and 6th Form walked Hadrian's Wall.  Beginning at the western end, after a night on a village hall floor, they spent four and a half days staying in youth hostels visiting every inch of the Wall, ending with a night out in Newcastle. They are now experts on the experiences of the Roman garrison and Borders weather patterns!  Walking with them and driving the minibuses were Mr Moon, Miss Ryan, Miss Pegg and Mr Keyes.

    DUKE OF EDINBURGH AWARD SCHEME

Our new cohort of M5 pupils has completed its Bronze expedition already. Mr Clark has initiated a link with the Red Cross and the group has started a 28-hour First Aid course and can complete its service later with the Red Cross.  Planning has begun for a Silver expedition at the end of this year to Gredos in Spain and for a Gold expedition to Peru in 2008. Three pupils completed their Gold Awards this term: Tom Renninson (OE), Amelia Davies and Harriet Trayler-Clarke will go to St James' Palace to receive their awards later this year. Claire Harrill has completed her Bronze Award

    CCF

After receiving the BGA Scholarship, Sam Huish flew his first solo on his 16th birthday.

I should like to pay tribute to Commander Frost, who steps down as the Contingent Commander at Christmas after 14 years in charge. He has run an excellent CCF, which has grown and prospered under his leadership. He is succeeded by Lieutenant-Commander Chapman.

    CHAPEL

The Chapel has had a good term, with growing Christian Union groups at both junior and senior level, and a new group to encourage leadership in the Lower Fifth, the "Pudding Club". Chapel Radio has achieved a "broadcast" on the Internet in almost each week of term, and after Christmas Chapel TV is about to launch. At the beginning of term we welcomed two chaplaincy assistants, Tom Birch and Lucy Russell, who are helping with the running of chapel activities. In September the Chaplain was asked to address the Independent Schools' Christian Association, a national grouping of school chaplaincies and pastoral staff, at King's School, Bruton. The Sixth Form chapel band continues to supply music for chapel services, and a younger version is about to launch in the New Year

    ABBOTS' WAY WALK

67 pupils and nine members of staff set out on the Abbots' Way Walk from Buckfast Abbey to Tavistock College. The walk falls neatly into two phases, a demanding and exciting section across the South Moor to Princetown and a rather less interesting slog down to Tavistock.  In the first part of the day the weather was appalling, and the walkers had to endure heavy rain and the odd thunder storm or two!  As the day went on the weather improved, so that by the time the teams reached Princetown most were dry and cheerful.

    BSES

Three young adventurers from last summer, Amelia Davies, Sinead Blick and Tom Pidgeon, gave an impressive presentation about their Summer 2006 trip to Greenland on 8 November. A similar presentation on the Amazon trip will be given by Ash McNamara, Jack Renninson and Harry Selley next term.

For summer 2007, Harriet Trayler-Clarke has gained a place on the Amazon expedition. Signe Hulbert will join the trip to Madagascar and Clare Rogers the Greenland expedition.

    CHARITIES

Brittany Harris, Emmie Giles, Rowena Caine and Bea Forshall swam four miles each in the school pool on Sunday 10 September to raise over £300 for the Romalli Forshall Charity, which educates children in Kenya.

The 6th Form's annual charity hats and footwear activity was enjoyed by all participants and included a lunchtime rock gig in the Sixth Form centre, raising over £350 for the SW Hospice.

Mufti day raised £630 for the school's 2006/7 charities: The Lord Mayor's Appeal (Multiple Sclerosis), The Exeter Leukaemia Fund and the West of England School for young people with little or no sight.

    FRIENDS OF EXETER SCHOOL

Mr Paul Tucker has been succeeded as Chair by Mrs Catharine Bowen. Mrs Yvonne Mould continues as Vice-Chair. The school and committee would like to express their sincere thanks to Paul for his sterling work for the association over a number of years. The other committee members are: Mrs Janice Petitjean, Mrs Rachel Freeman, Mrs Lesley Burchell, Mrs Julia Webber, Mrs Wendy Grant, Mrs Ulrike Fraser, Mrs Susan Godwin, Mrs Sue Williams and Mrs Jo Holder. Please would any other parents who wish to be involved in the valuable supporting work that FOES does contact Mrs Bowen, c/o the Bursary. I should like to thank the committee for their various fundraising activities and for providing refreshments at school plays. Mrs Godwin deserves particular thanks for her role in organising the recent very successful FOES Christmas Fayre.

    OTHER INFORMATION

Our 3rd Form pupils enjoyed four residential weekends on Dartmoor before half-term: many thanks to co-ordinator  Mr Allen and all the staff who made these worthwhile events possible.

The opening of the School House extension by the Chairman of Governors Prof W.E Yates was a pleasant event, witnessed by a number of colleagues, former colleagues, Governors and OEs. A commemorative print of the building is now on sale and can be viewed in the Bursary.

The Guest of Honour at this year's Speech Day was Ms Clare Connor OBE, who was captain of the 2005 England women's Ashes-winning cricket side.

The Exeter OE dinner went well in September, with a good turn-out to hear Guest of Honour Mr Wright, who spoke eloquently about the enduring ethos of the school and his life now, as a VSO volunteer and photographer, amongst other things.

The parental talk on the benefits and distractions of the Internet, led by Mr Lines, Mrs Cull and Mr Hughes was very worthwhile. It underlined the school's philosophy about the use of the internet, exploring the modern virtual learning climate and detailing the school's teaching approach and ICT resources fully and helpfully.

The preacher at the school Remembrance Service on Friday 10 November was Revd John Morris RM of Lympstone CTC.

The school is most grateful to Gilbert Stephens, solicitors for allowing their Southernhay premises to be used on three September Saturdays to host the Sixth Form interview scheme.

The school has one or two visiting pupils (often German) into the Lower Sixth Form for one term, or sometimes longer. In the past we have found accommodation for them with our own pupils' families as paying guests. We should like to update our list of families willing to be contacted with a view to possibly hosting a visiting pupil. If you wish to be included in our list of potential host families, please contact the Registrar, Mrs Drake on 01392 411248.

    STAFF NEWS

Mr Pettifer is still recovering from serious illness. He was married to Ms Helen Cole in October. I am grateful to Mr Foster for covering Mr Pettifer's classes.

Mrs Harris leaves us at the end of the term to become Head of Learning Support at Bedales School, Hampshire. She has been an excellent teacher of History and has involved herself in tutoring, residentials, outdoor activities and sport over 20 years at the school. She will be much missed. I have appointed Mrs Sarah Bartholomew, who is currently teaching at Blundell's, to teach History and Mrs Bridget Marshall, currently a dyslexia teacher at South Dartmoor Community College, to succeed her as our Learning Support Co-ordinator from 1 January 2007.

Company Accountant Mr Dyer also leaves us at the end of term to become the Bursar of Trinity School, Teignmouth. He has been a stalwart of school administration for over a decade and has fostered close links with our former pupils as the Secretary of the Old Exonian Club. His successor is Mrs Gina Robins.

Mr Rodgers will be away from school for some of January, coaching the England women's U20 squad in Australia. His 1st XI hockey team will be coached during that time by Mr Graeme Skinner (OE) of ISCA HC.

May I wish you and your families a happy Christmas and a healthy and prosperous New Year?
