On Friday 24 May, a squad of girls comprising on two U12s, two U13s, three U14s and two U15s took part in the Queen's Taunton U15 Broderick Girls' Cricket Tournament.

"In the group stages the girls showed some lovely brains with the bat and with good backing up and calling they were able to rotate the strike well and build competitive scores," said Mr Mason.

"Once the nerves had settled they bowled some steady lines making it hard for the opposition to score runs. A good first match against Millfield started the day with a win but this was followed by a last ball thriller against Blundell’s. Blundell’s needed a four from the final delivery but could only manage a single. With a win in the final group match against Chilton Trinity the team made it into the cup semi-final.

In the semi-final Queen's started well with the bat but good bowling and fielding saw them restricted to 52 from their seven overs. In reply Exeter did the simple things well and limited the dot balls that they faced reaching the total with an over to spare. Wellington batted first in the final and amassed a daunting 77 for 4. The girls fought hard with the bat but struggled to hit the boundaries finishing on 70 for 1 and coming runners up in the tournament.

"Well done to all the squad who took part: Nell Smith, Zoe Maynard, Eliza Heard, Georgia Read, Grace Jury, Elusha Gribble, Rosie Hobbs, Freya Munson and Katie Donovan.

At the start of half term seven hardy swimmers from Exeter School took on the challenge of swimming the the distance of the channel overnight. The event which was held in Wiveliscombe open air pool and involved schools from Taunton School and Cullompton College. The team swam in one hour legs through the clear and chilly night to complete the 22 miles distance.

"The team spirit was strong and all pupils worked together to support each other throughout this marathon event," said Dr Robb.

"The team included three experienced swimmers who completed the event last year, Fred Croft, Grace Gillingham and Hamish Bell, along with four swimmers new to the event, namely Connie Croft, Fran Jenner, Poppy McKinney and Jojo Yang.

"Not only did the team complete the event but impressive swims ranging from 2.7 to 4 km per hour ensured that they knocked 33 minutes off last years time to complete the event in 10 hours 40 minutes and 20 seconds.

"Many thanks to Mrs Jenner who accompanied the team and maintained watch on poolside for the entirety of the night without any sleep."
