Trio through to National Final

Target Sprint Regional Championships

For the second year in a row the National Series South West Regional Championship for Target Sprint took place on the playing fields at Exeter School, on 7 July 2018.

Target Sprint combines the athleticism of running with precision of air rifle shooting. Often compared to Biathlon without the skis although the athletes don’t run with their rifles. Each competitor runs 400m followed by the challenge of hitting 5 knock down targets. This is repeated and then followed by a last 400m dash to the finish line, where the first past the post wins. It is a true test of athletic stamina, breathing control and accuracy.

This qualifier was one of seven national events leading to the National Final over the weekend of 6-7 October at Yate Outdoor Sports Complex. Saturday’s event saw a full spectrum of age groups participating, many for the first time and it was great to see many returning to take part for a second year.

It was a very hot day and there were some hot performances to match. Well done to Exeter School pupils Tom Gray, Flora Gray and Lily Howe who have qualified for the next stage.

The National Series Events in the UK are promoted and run by British Shooting. Former Commonwealth medal winner and Olympic Pistol shooter Gorgs Geikie is the National Events & Commercial Coordinator.

Gorgs said: “It is great to be back at Exeter School for the South West Championships. It is a fantastic location to stage an event and has all the facilities and more that is needed. The school have been fantastic with their support and shared vision for Target Sprint which helps us provide the next generation of people with a challenging and enjoyable experience.

“Target Sprint is still a relatively new event providing something different, fun and welcoming to all. This multi-sport culture is what got me on the road to the Olympics, and you never know there could be a future Olympian in our fold! A personal thank you to Exeter School for embracing this event.”
