Senior School geographers explore Saas Grund

In glorious weather, 34 pupils from Lower and Middle Fifth spent a week in the beautiful Saas valley in Switzerland at the end of the summer term.

Led by Head of Geography Mrs Sail, and accompanied by Governor Mrs Clark, Director of Alumni Relations Mr Davidson, Geography teacher Mr Hyde and alumni Hugh Clark and Peter Davidson, pupils reinforced their understanding of Lower and Middle Fifth topics on glaciation, hazards, mountain landscapes and tourism.

Highlights included visiting UNESCO site Aletsch Glacier, which offered superb views and the chance for field sketching, and a trip to the thermally heated water park in Rhone Valley. Pupils also enjoyed swimming in an alpine lake with views of the Matterhorn, walking from Sunnega to Zermatt with views of the Matterhorn around every corner, walking in the snow above a glacier above Saas Fee.

Thanks to Mr Hyde and alumnus Hugh for organising games and football in the evenings and to the fabulous drivers Mark and James from Bakers Dolphin who were professional and fitted in well with the group.

Head of Geography Mrs Sail said the pupils were excited about the landscape and enjoyed Mr Davidson’s superb evening lectures on the landscape and history of the area which they wrote up in their trip diaries.

“The pupils were well-behaved and a joy to spend time with,” she said. “They said the food at the hotel was the best they have had on a school trip! Thanks to hosts Claudio and Hermelinde who looked after us superbly.”
