IAPS Tennis Championship
Four Exeter Junior School pupils represented the school over half term in the IAPS Tennis Championship.
Alex Wreford, Toby Page, Elle Golsworthy and Nell Smith competed in the U11A event held at Millfield School.
Mrs Gimber said it was a tough draw of 16 of the top independent tennis schools.
“We played as a mixed team, playing 4 matches in the hot sunny weather, and each player played singles and doubles in each match,” she said.
In the first match against Framlingham, we lost 0-6 but there were some close sets and Alex only lost on a tie-break.
We won the second match 4-2 against St Neot's with Alex, Toby and Elle all winning their singles and Elle and Nell winning their doubles.
This win put us in the plate semi-final against King's Hawford.
“It was a very close, competitive and exciting match with several tie-breaks,” said Mrs Gimber.
“Their boys were very strong but Elle won her singles and Elle and Nell won their doubles so overall we lost 2-4.
“Our last match was again very tense and could not have been closer with 4 of the 6 matches involving tie-breaks.”
Toby and Elle won their singles, the boys lost their doubles. Elle and Nell were one set all but lost the championship tie-break. Overall, we were twelfth out of 16 nationally.
“The players showed great resilience and must be commended for their play,” said Mrs Gimber.
“Nell Smith's achievement was particularly outstanding as she had only been playing and receiving coaching for 3 weeks so that she could help the team enter the competition!”
