Get Kids Going!

Exeter Junior School Headmistress Mrs Sue Marks is busy training for the London Marathon on 28 April 2019.

Mrs Marks will be running on behalf of a very worthwhile charity, ‘Get Kids Going!’. ‘Get Kids Going!’ is a national charity, which aims to give disabled children and young people - up to the age of 26 years - the wonderful opportunity of playing sport. They provide them with specially built sports' wheelchairs so they can take part: in athletics, marathons, tennis, skiing, rugby, sailing, boccia, basketball, sledge hockey, table tennis, fencing, shooting, archery, powerlifting and many more sports. The charity also inspires British disabled youngsters to compete in sporting events, from their initial introduction right up to Paralympic level, by awarding sports grants to help with training, physiotherapy, travel, competition fees, design and development of sports' equipment etc. They support children with all disabilities and from all backgrounds, not only, to access sport but also provide manual wheelchairs for children to use every day at home, at school and to enable them to play with their friends.

PE and Girls' Games Coordinator Miss Kate Wright said: "We love our sport at Exeter Junior School and are so fortunate that we all have the opportunity and ability to enjoy participating in such a wide variety of sport in our school.

"So, as an appreciation of this together we have come up with a plan that could possibly help this worthwhile charity. As part of pupils regular games warm ups, pupils have been completing a 900m run/jog around the perimetre of the astro and the netball courts. Combining each individual’s distance, the forms together aim to run the equivalent of at least a marathon (26.2 miles) before the end of term.

"The combined mileage from each form, the distance completed could possibly accrue a distance equivalent to running from Exeter Junior School to the start of the marathon at Black Heath, and back (around 404 miles!)."
