National Plate Competition Round 2

1st XV v Taunton School – won 19 – 15

Luckily the weather held off to allow for a running game of rugby that ebbed and flowed giving both teams a chance to win.

"Taunton started the strongest with a kick down the left hand side taking a big bounce into the wingers arms to go over the try line," said Mr Ross.

"However, Exeter responded well, building pressure through their set piece and multiple phases, allowing Jack Syradd to cross in the corner. Off the restart Exeter struck again with a strong kick chase forcing the error and Tom Watkinson winning the footrace to dot the ball down and converted by Charlie Pullen.

"A try against the run of play for Taunton after more pressure from Exeter left the halftime score at 12 – 10 to the home team. A tense second half followed, and as the crowd grew the intensity of the Exeter defence did as Taunton launched multiple attacks. Eventually Taunton found a bit of space in the left corner to go 12 – 15 ahead and with 8 minutes left the tension left the crowd restless.

"Exeter kept their composure and with just 3 minutes left the score of the match came by Harry Emmett after Exeter spread the ball left and right with Guy Roche finding some space before offloading to the supporting Emmett with a clear run under the posts.

"This wasn’t to be the final act though. In the remaining three minutes Taunton pushed for the winning score and after a 25 man maul and 10 darts for the line Exeter secured the penalty to end the game to delighted scenes on the pitch and side line.

"The reward is another home match against Sherborne School in a fortnight which will challenge the 1st XV to raise their game further, please come and support the boys."
