A learning experience
Royal Navy Summer Camp 2018
This year’s Royal Navy Summer Camp once again took place at Roadford Lake for the first week of the holidays. Eleven RN Section Cadets were joined by Joey Bown of the RAF Section. The beginners group was 7 strong with the remaining 5 forming the advanced group. The beginners worked towards RYA Youth Stage 1 & 2 and the advanced group were working on the Adult Levels.
The weather was superb with enough breeze to get quality sailing and even fly spinnakers with the advanced group. All cadets had a packed programme of sailing but including other activities such as; racing, SUP, windsurfing, highropes and teambuilding.
As we were self-catering they also learnt how to cook for themselves; the highlight of this was the cooking competition where each team was given a budget and had to use it to provide a substantial and nutritious two-course meal for their group.
Dr Chapman said he was delighted to report that all the beginners group gained their RYA Youth Stage 2 and all the advanced group gained their RYA Adult Level 2 with some valuable practice towards the Level 3.
“They all also survived their own cooking!” he said.
“My thanks to Mrs Shrubb for helping with the logistics for the whole of the camp, to Mrs Sheehan for helping out on the weekend before her wedding! And to Mr Smith for helping in the latter part of the camp.”
