Colourful Christmas Concert
A variety of genres and ensembles on show
An audience of 500 and a body of over 250 pupil performers enjoyed an ebulliently festive Christmas Concert on 15 December in the Senior School Hall. There was the traditional collection of Christmas items, some old, some new (notably Goin’ To Bethlehem, performed by the Vocal Ensemble, and the Middle School Choir’s spirited Let it Snow!). It was particularly rewarding to hear the variety of music-making, from the most senior musician right down to the youngsters in Junior Orchestra.
Alongside the established orchestras, bands and choirs, a number of new ensembles have recently added depth and breadth to the Music Department, and many were given their first public airing on this occasion. They included two new jazz and pop groups, Munk performing Azul and the Swunkettes with their arrangement of I’ll Be Waiting, and the Flute Choir with their seasonal Sleigh Ride.
The evening was rounded off in style with the Symphony Orchestra’s multi-media Magnificent Seven theme, with appearances by a Cat in the Hat, or at least a giant Stetson, and prancing horses, carefully steered by the Magnificent Two, the Head Boy and Head Girl.
