Physics can be beautiful. The image above is a levitating superconducting magnet at a temperature of

Physics Motion 250.jpgPhysics is the most fundamental of all the sciences. Physicists study everything from the very small, sub-atomic particles, to the very large, the whole universe! The study of physics involves exploring important questions, trying to understand and explain the world around us.

Physics helps you develop your thinking, organise your thoughts logically and solve complex problems using a range of skills. It is creative, logical and fun. It has lead to the development of the key technologies we use today. Physicists invented the transistor, the foundation for all things electronic, mastered electricity and gravity, helped put a man on the moon and facilitated the discovery of the structure of DNA. With dwindling energy resources, the rapid advancement of technology and global warming the modern physicist's role is even more crucial.

Blue tank Photo 250.jpgPhysics at Exeter is taught by an enthusiastic and dedicated team of specialists. The results at GCSE and A-level are very good indeed and students enjoy the subject. Despite a national decline in the subject it is one of the most popular choices for AS and A-level in the school. More detail can be found on the A2/AS Physics course here. After A-level the vast majority of Physics students enter University with a significant number going on to study Physics-related degrees. There are also an encouraging number of Oxbridge successes in Physics, Engineering and Medicine.

Van der Graaff Hair Standing 250.jpgLessons often involve a wide range of activities including, experimental work, data logging, use of modelling software, group work and discussions.

Our Physics education is not restricted to the classroom - there are several outings to an assortment of events each year. Last year this included trips to the Big Bang Science Fair, the South West Festival of Physics, the Exeter University Future Engineers Day and several visits to various Universities.

We also offer a wide range of extra-curricular activities including Physics Olympiads, Master classes, a lower school science club and a bridge builder competition for budding Engineers. We have twice been finalists in the IoP Paperclip Physics competition; winning in 2006. Additionally we entered the SCICAST competition (http://www.planet-scicast.com/) for the first time in 2009. We were awarded 1st and 2nd place in the South West and our videos were nominated for three national awards.

We are passionate about our Physics and we aim to ensure our students feel the same way!
