Modern Foreign Languages

MFL

The Modern Foreign Languages Department teaches French, German and Spanish at Key Stage 3, GCSE and A Level. The Head of Department is Mr Michael Latimer, who has been in post since September 2010. There are five full-time and three part-time teachers, plus two foreign language assistants, who use eight teaching rooms in the Modern Languages/Sixth Form building. The subject follows the Edexcel specification at GCSE and the WJEC specification at A Level. The department provides linguistic input in the enrichment activities of the Catalyst Club for younger pupils, and the Crossing Club for senior pupils. Bilingual and advanced pupils are also offered weekly extension sessions with the language assistants. The department hosts the Onatti Theatre company 3 times a year who perform for Year 9 pupils. The school has a long-standing biennial exchange programme with a school in Hildesheim, and there are popular annual trips to Normandy for Year 7, Valencia for Year 10, and Nice for Year 11 pupils and above, as well as regular cinema and theatre trips.
