The English Department teaches an internally designed course throughout KS3, before preparing all pupils for IGCSE English Language and IGCSE English Literature, which are both examined in Year 11. In Years 12 and 13 the English department offers a popular English Literature A Level, for which we teach AQA English Literature Specification B. The Head of Department is Mr Andy Dobson, who has been in post since 2014. There are six full-time teachers who all have their teaching rooms in the lower corridor of the Andrews building. The department runs regular theatre trips to London, Bristol, Bath and Plymouth. There is a programme of visiting writers who come in to school to work with our pupils and to offer talks on their work. The department offers a broad range of enrichment activities: these include reading groups, competitions, a creative writing magazine and debating events. In addition, individual support is provided to help develop pupils preparing for Oxbridge or a Russell Group university: the department has an excellent record of success with Oxbridge English applications.
